" H I} The town of Lakc'Megantic, in the Province of Quebec, voted almost una- nimously for prohibitions last week. _ Public sentiment had been worked up to such a pitch that those in favor of licence were ashamed to go to the poll. The ,campaign was managed by the parish priest, Father Choquette. When he was ‘placed at Lake Megantic there were nine taverns, and temperance sentiment was dead. Through his exertions the number of licences was reduced, but the evil was only modiï¬ed a little, and he saw the only remedy was closing every bar-room. The night before the vote was taken he called a mass meeting which was held in his church. The front pews were reserved for Protestants, and among the speakers was a Protestantâ€" an unheard of incident in that Province.
