Powels' Corners. ( Correspondence of (he Gazelle.) The temperance wave is spreading faster in Quebec than in Ontario. There are eleven per cent. more places under local option. They do not require the three ï¬fths clause in Quebec province. Perhaps the brewers and distillers are bribing Whitney. Will the member for East Victoria vote to repeal the three fifths clause? If he did, or would, he would be the recipient of hearty con- gratulations of all those who hate the meanest business on this earth, the lieuor trafï¬c. Now, l)r., do your duty. On February 8th Mr. Walter and Miss E. Black were united in marriage at the home of the bride near Cannington. We ivish the young couple a long and happy ifc. Mr. John Lane was called away to Cobourg last week, owing to the death of a relative. It has been proven without a doubt that horse buyers can buy horses from fifteen to twenty dollars less from farmers than farmers can buy from one another. Mr. Fred. Hardy of Ops township spent a few days here calling on old friends. Miss Daisy Cooper is visiting Zion. friends this week. The box social which took place in the church here on the 15th was a ï¬nan- cial success, the programme was good, and those who took part in itare to be congratulated. From the time the social was announced and up to the 15th the young people had to contend against 'bad roads and had to battle against storms, but victory was. achieved. It is evident that there is great talent in this community. The many young friends of Miss Leona Parrish are pleased to know that she is recovering from her recent illness, and it is hoped that nothing will mar the progress. The roads here are all passable, but very uneven. -0 ACCIDENT. Mrs. H. That Kirklield team has a big string of victor- ies to its credit this year, having only been defeated once, and that was at Brechin. They are a pretty speedy bunch, and would make any of the lea- gue teams hustle to defeat them on local ice. They have a splendid defence and their forward line, too, is pretty classy. The whole countryside turned out to see the game, and the enthusiasm of the crowd knew no bounds. Mr. Ferguson, 8. C. P. R. surveyor, handled the game satisfactorialy, and the best of good feel- ings existed among. the. players. McClellan, Superintendent of the Trent Valley Can- al in regard to the McLarens Creek road. The township wants assistance from the Dominion Government towards the com struction of the throughfare. Mr. MClellan pointed out that the Government had already done much at this point and were. prepared to finish this piece of work as soon as the town- ship shows disposition to connect up the road with the main throughfare. The township deputation felt that the municipality could not undertake the expense, and decided to ask the Ontario Government to make a grant towards the construction of the road in question. Mr. McClellan took the stand that it was useless to continue the grading of the road through the swamp if it was not connected with the main throughfare._ The construction of this road means the. lessening of the distance from, Eenelon.
