The beautiful Lakes of Killarney are equal, if not superior to all other noted beauty-spots in Western Eur- ope. The scenery around them pos- MEN of NEW: _ Moot Structural Steel Workers Are of Irish Blood it is a curious fact that most of the Structural steel workers engaged on various huge structures in Canadian ,_v._â€"â€"â€"--â€"IM ,1 . ,. . v, A Woman oi Words Mrs. Harry E. 'In fact, the Irish and Swedes, or “square heads," as they are called, have almost a monopoly of this dangerous trade. The Irish will take more chances than the men of any other nationality, but the Swedes are. not far behind, and how they divide the honors was illus- trated recently. Two steel columns for the top storeys of a skyscraper bad Just been set in place at the cor- ners, and stood starkly‘ up fifty feet above the nearest cross girder. Each , column was about eight inches square. When the news spread that a photo- grapher was about to take a picture of them, two workmen "shinned" up the columns and stood on the top. The man at one corner was an Irishman, the other was a Swede. Sometimes these structural ironworkers lose their nerve. Why it happens, or how. they do not know; but sometimes a sudden panic will overwhelm a man. Then. if he knows his business, he will shout for help, for he cannot help himself. Now and then. a man gets a mad desire to hurl himself from the roof, and if he is not restrained he will go as surely as though a great magnet ware drawing him down to the earth. Oddly enough, one terrible fright rarely causes a man to give up the business. He gets back his nerve in a few days and becomes as daring as over.- It is said that an ironworker who goes to a new job when a building is already high in the air has not the'nerve of a man who has been on the building from the ground up. Accidents are more likely to occur while the first few storeys are under construction than later on, for the men take more chances, forgetting that a 40-foot fall is about as deadly as one ‘twioe as Iona ~ ,_ .. 3 ADJUSTABLE CUSHIONS’ Head Fleet and Back Rest on Separ- ate‘ Rolling Bands. in. making a chair with a cushioned back it has heretofore been impossible to arrange the cushions to suit every- body, so the manufacturers have tried to strike the average. A Utah genius has designed an arrangement of adjust- ableable cushions, which will fit tall persons or short persons, revolves on rollers attached to top and bottom of the chair back. On two of these belts .‘-"~"~\. ..‘ -'- .-..m,u-.».r_.....‘~v .41.. ._.â€"_...,,__- "9 FITS AN}: SIZE PERSON. is p. back-rest and on the other .‘two a, head-rest. As will be understood, these cushions may be adjusted at and; er. thereby providing a comfortable back for any person, no matter ‘ hat sesses a peculiarity, richness, and var- iety, and the vegetation a wild luxuâ€" riauce which cannot be thoroughly ap- preciated until seen. Among the great writers who have given the lakes un- qualified praise are Sir Walter Scott, Wordsworth, Thackeray, Macaulay. Sir -Waiter Scott said it was “the grandest sight he had ever seen;” Wordsworth, that “in point of scenery the finest portion of the British Is- lands;" and Sir David Wilkis, the great painter, that “for beauty and grandeur, he had never seen them unsurpassed." ' The lakes lie embedded in the midst of wildly majestic and lofty mountains, whosa sides and steeps are covered with the most luxuriant verâ€" dure and shrubbery, and in many pla- ccs with splendid forest trees. The highest mountains are Carrantuai and Mangerton. The bosom of the lakes is dotted with romantic islands. some of which are connected by bridges with each other and with ihe shorts; and all around are cataracts and waterfalls of every size and form, many being prominent points of inter- est im the excursions. Besides their beauty, the Lakes of Killarney are of great interest on account of the many prehistoric . remains found around them, and the ruins of the celebrated monasteries of Innisfallcn. Muckrors, and Aghadoc. The lakes cannot be satisfactorily seen and explored by the tourist in less than three days. Those, however, who have leisure, and wish to be more minute in their exploraâ€" tions, may spend weeks in roaming among the mountains and gleams with profit and gratification, each day ex- hibiting new and increasing beauties, the closer and longer they are ex- amined.
