{I l . luau“? l l We“, . “cuâ€"M“... A. n, Powles‘ Corners. .â€" Coneapondcnce cf the Gazette It is four or five weeks since the read- ers of the Gazette have heard from Powles’ Corner. Time has hurried all of Us into the month otAngust, and passing scenes tell us that this life will soon be gone. Between twoor three hundred Latter Day Saints arrived from Toronto about ten days ago, and the largest amount of freight was unloaded at Hall's that ever arrived at any one time since the station was built. The spiritual advisers are Bishop Evans, Elder Thompson, Elder Pycock and two or three others who assist. We have heard four or five ser- mohs and we have not decided just what stand to take. If the Latter Day Saints are right then other denominations are wrong and are cruelly deceiving the peOple. Bishop Evans quotes scripture to prove it. Get right with God, vote as .you pray, and abolish the bar. The hay crop is about all housed and is a very satisfactory one. Clover that Was. out early was almost spoiled. Fall wheat, rye and barley have been cut. Some dry weather isneeded now. Some of the tall wheat in this section will yield 20 or 25 bushels per acre. Try a few acres of fall wheat and sow early. Mr. Wm. Deyman of Fenelon Falls was out Monday, the 29th, to examine the school furnace. A . few improvements . have been made to add another year to its life, and then a new furnace will be installed. Quite a number of our citizens are go- ing this week for huckleberrirs to the Dighy‘rocks. It is to be hoped their ex- pectations will be realized. _, Last Sunday afternoon -being the last Sunday the Latter Day Saints were her , a large number took advantage of hear- ing Bishop Evans speak. His sermon will be food for thought. His book of fifty sermons will be placed in the hands of every Methodist minister in the pro- vince. _ ~' Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Hardy of Ops town- ship called on his son-in-law, Mr. W. Glsspell, last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Herron of Pet- locality. Mr. and Mrs. Greaves of Palestine Eldon, wer visiting at Mr. J. Powles the first of this week. - A very large deputation 'of berry pick-v ers went north last Monday. Mrs. A. Miller of Fenelon Fall is visitâ€" ing her sister, Mrs. J. S. Brown. ‘ The Misses Cuthbert of Lindsay are spending part of their holidays at Pow - lcs' Corner. 1 Bringing potatoes to Canada is like taking coals to Newcastle, yet that is what is happening. Canada is just. now an importer of potatoes. In spite of the agricultural resources of the country and adaptability for potato culture, our production last year was not sullieient to supply the demand of the home market, consequently we have had to go abroad for potatoes and import them by the. shipload. And the strangest part of it all, we are importing them from the world‘s greatest consuming market. Some of our young men are going to do what Horace Greely advised when he said,“ Young man, go W'est.” They will go about the 15th. erborough are visiting friends in this a a a a n n. a mafia”: _â€"...... Siege of Delhl at C. N. E. The Siege of Delhi will be the historic spectacle at the Canadian National Exhibition this year. There is no more terribly picturesque scene in' English history than this sketch from the great Indian mutiny. The rich and varied cos- tumes of the natives of dih'orent castes, mingled with the uniforms of the Eng- lish officers, give to it color that cannot fail to delight the eye, while the tragic drama cannot fail to be of enthralling interest. Every detail is to receive the strictest attention, to make this the greatest of the manv historical specta» else that the Canadian National has be- come famous for.~ +0 Why They Went. ___u As the Sunday-School teacher entered her class-room she saw leaving in great haste a little girl and her still smaller brother. ' “ Why, Mary, you aren‘t going away?" she exclaimed in surprise. " Pleath, Mith Anne, we've got to go,” was the distressed reply. “Jimmy ‘th thwallowed hith collection.” -o 9 A» Business College Course leads to success.
