A Faklr Gets His Just Duesâ€"A Loeuaeleus Alderman-Graft In the Cityâ€"New Railway Board Chairman. "Doctor" James Gevalia Evans. who hes not been sentenced to fifteen months in Ingstou penitentiary on a. charge of 101" cry. never made much of a. splash in oronto. though he has been travelling around the Province for several years. Un:il the last year or two "Dr." Evans made his headquarters in Kingston. where go now returns in a different capacity. 0 arrived there about eight years ago from whence no one knows. He forthwith became active in missionary work. And. among many activities, evolved one pet scheme of establishing a. missionary boat on the river Jordan. The boat would travel up ,end down the river carrying Christianity to the Jews and the unborn- medans of the Holy Land. In advocat- Ing this and other schemes “Dr.” Evans often assumed Oriental costume. which added to his pieturcsqueness and impres- -elveuess. and the sensation his appear- ance caused will be recalled at many ints. Subscriptions for his missionary ouse-boat flowed in until one day a traveller just returned from Palestine as- ;erted that the river at that. point would srdly float a chip. let alone a house-boat. "Dr." Evans was not perturbed. He- simply switched to some other scheme. The truth about. Evans is that he was I morphine fiend. His arms are a. mass of punctures where the needle has been 'Injectsd. 'lhet accounts for his visionary schemes and his absolute irresponsibility. nuke Saw Medals. Recently. when the Duke of Counaught was visiting Toronto, there was to be a review of the Veterans’ Association. Evans hurried up and got in line as a veteran. and behold his immaculate frock coat was decorated with a string of medals and badges for valor. long service and other military accomplishments. that turned the heart of the proudest veteran green with envy. When the Duke of Counaught passed along the line his sharp eye caught the array. He stopped, examined the medals keenly. and. it is said. detected the fraud. Shortly afterwards came "Dr." Evane" arrest and subsequent ex- posure. Some years ago. when the Russian Jap- anese war broke out, there was practi- cally no one on this continent who knew much about conditions at the scene of fighting. Clubs and associations searched everywhere for lecturers who could deal with the subject, but none was forth- coming. “Dr.” Evans jumped into the breach. He knew. Needless to say. his lectures were a frost. although the first. ones were largely attended. He advertis- ed pictures. and fulfilled his promise by showing pictures of a boat sailing into various ports all around the world.'but .when she got. to Japan he calmly an- nounced that from this point on the cen- nor would allow no pictures out. ' In the 1911 election "Dr." Evans jumped to the front as an Imperialistic orator. and in one capacity or another he is widely known throughout the Province. His “schemes” rarely did anybody any harm. Even the forgery on which he was connected. arising in connection with n private College here. was not serious in its consequences. Loqunclous "Sam" McBride. One of the spectacular figures of the Toronto Gity Council is Alderman Sam McBride. film is decidedly loquacious. That is one of his chiefest claims to fame. 4 favorite pastime of the reporters at Council meetings is to keep track of the number of times Bum speaks. Sometimes I he record runs to surprising figures-once t ran to '15 different speeches. which for a session of five hours' duration means that he averaged one speech every four min- utes throughout the performance. Na- turally 8m does not talk very long at a time. and sometimes what he says is not much to the point. Again it is too point- ed for some of his fellow aldermen, for he has the faculty of getting under the skin of his companions with personal re- marks. Generally he is good natured. but. the other day he threatened across the Council board to shove his list down the long throat of Controller Church. The good people of the town were greatly shocked and the newspapers read the Council lectures on the indecency o-f bear garden exhibitions. But Sam afterwards e. logized and said he did not mean w at he said. Picks Unpopular Side. Another claim to fnmc Alderman Mc- Bride has is that be generally votes with the minority. He seems to have a faculty of picking out the unpopular side of an argument. As an "opposor" ho is an ex- nert. He was instrumental in blocking the Humber Boulevard scheme for a year. his ground ostensibly being the: it is a scheme to make a millionaire of Mr. Home Smith at the expense of the city. If the project had been unpopular Aid. McBride would have probably supported it. Newspapers and others threaten Aid. McBride with defect at the polls for his obstructive tactics. But he doesn‘t worry. Every First of January since 1905. with one exception, be has bobbed up serenely near the top of the poll in word thrce. He seems to go on the theory that by op~ sing everything he gathers in all the fits» of the knockers and sorcbeads. A" which is possible but very rarely ac- complished is to place the tips of the first. and third fingers together, and then try to draw the middle finger between them without dis- jointing the tips, and without sup- port from any other fingers. Lie flat on your back, bend your leg back on to your body, and then try to straighten your knee. You will find it impossible, the reason being that you are already using the necessary muscles for the first. action, the lower part of the leg be- ‘ing worked by the same muscles as control the upper part. If you were to ask an average cigar-smoker if he could smoke a. cigar right through in steady, con- secutive puffs without once taking it from his month, he would probaâ€" bly smile at the simplicity of the feat. You are fairly safe to wager him that he cannot do it. Half a cigar generally consumes itself whilst held in the fingers of the smoker or placed on an ash-tray. . â€".â€"â€"K‘ ARE YOUR HANDS CIIAPPED! Zam-Buk Will Cure Them. The particular danger of chapped bands and cold cracks (apart alto- gether from the pain) is that the cold is likely to penetrate and set up inflammation, festering, or blood-poison. Directly the skin is broken by a. cut, graze or scratch, or chaffed and cracked by the ac- tion of the cold winds and water, the one necessary precaution is to apply Zam-Buk freely. The pure herbal juices from which Zam-Buk is prepared are so per- fectly combined and refined that the immediate effect of these Zam- Buk dressings. is soothing, antisep- tic, and healing. ‘ Mrs. O. M. Phoen, Neuchatel, Alta., writes :-â€"-“I must tell you how pleased I am with Zam-Buk. ‘My husband had an old frostbite on his foot for many years, and had tried almost every known rem- edy, without any effect, but the first application of Zam-Buk seem- ed to help him so much that he persevered and the sore is now cured. ' The man who scoffs at an idea. or doctrine which he does not fully understand has at least the courage to show where he stands. The gospel of Health has many converts who formerly laughed at the idea. that tea and coffee, for ex~ ample, ever hurt anyone. Upon looking into the matter seriously, often at the suggestion of a friend, such persons have found that Pos- tum and a. friend’s advice, have been their salvation. - “My sister was employed in an eastern city where she had to do calculating,” writes a Western girl. “She suffered with headache until she was almost unfit/ted for duty. “Her landlady persuaded her to quit coffee and use Postum, and in a. few days she was entirely free from headache.” (Tea is just as injurious as coffee because it con. tains caffeine, the same drug found in coffee.) “She told her employer about it, and on trying it, he had the same experience. “My father and I have both suf- fered much from nervous headache since I can remember, but we scoffed at the idea, advanced by my sister, that coffee was the cause of our trouble. “However, we finally quit coffee and began using Postum. Father has had but one headache now in four years, due to a severe cold, and I have lost my headaches and sour stomach which I am now con- vinced came from coffee. ' “A cup of good, hot Postum is satisfying to me when I do not care‘ to eat a. meal. Circumstances caused me to locate in a new coun- try and I feared I would not be able to get my favorite drink, Pos- tum, but I was relieved to find that a. full supply is kept here with a heavy demand for it.” Name given by Canadian Postum 00., Windsor, Ont. Dr. Moretti of Rome Says He Has Solved Great Problem. Dr. Riccardo Moretti of Rome claims to have solved the problem of wireless telephony owing to a. special generator of electric oscilâ€" lations of his invention, which has been successfully experimented with between Rome and Tripoli. This apparatus consists of two poles fixed vertically a small distance apart and through one of which a. thin continuous jet of water flows. The water is evaporated by an electric spark between the ends of the poles and an alternating cur- rent of extraordinary rapidity is consequently generated since the oscillations thus produced are cal- culated at several hundred thou- tion-s exceed in number and rapidity the vocal vibrations by means of this generator it is possible to transmit the voice ovar long dis- tances.
