The following appeared among the news despatches in Monday’s Globe, and will be of interest to Gazette readers, as Mrs. Rice addressed a meeting in Fenelon Falls on Novem- ber 1st: Welland, Dec. 22.â€"Considerable excitement has been caused by the arrest here of Chester Rice, charged with fraud. He was representing him. self as the agent of the Brunswick- Bulke Collcnder Company, mnnufactu rers of pool tables, and trying to sell the exclusive right to games called billiard pinole, asking part payment I , I in advance. Rice claimed to be try- - ' ing to raise money to pay his mother’s e a hotel bill here, also enough money to reach Hamilton. Mrs. Rice. who with her son and manager, Horatio White, is staying at a. local hotel, is styled the “girl preacher.†She was here ixln'] embrace Opportunity of ex- last summer speaking against local op- tion. Rice claimed his mother was pressing a. hope that the year how fast employed by the hotel-keeperwmn- tario to preach against local option, Verulam Council. - virtually as much use as it signed by half the ratepayers. inasmuch as the law distinctly states that the council has the ’ legal right to submit such a by-law with,â€" ‘out any petition whatever, and, besides. we were advised by at least one of the council that it was only necessary to. show enough signers to justify council in putting the question to a. vote of the people. Also, the petition was not “ all over the village." as many citizens never- henrd of it who would gladly have signed - it had they known of its existence. 5 There mks absolutely no organization, 1 and everyone who signed it did so with- out tbc least amount of canvassing or , coercion. 3rd.
