R. Morton, ex- pert forester for the Dominion Govern- ment, and there are three ways in ‘Which the farmer, by the exercise of ordinary common sense, can vastly im- prove the composition, production and reproduction of his wccdlot. _ The ï¬rst thing necessary is to im- prove the character of the crop, which can be done by cutting down and using for ï¬rewood all diseased and deformed trees, as well as such species whose presence in the woodlot is not desir- able. Only too frequently is the method of cutting exactly the' reverse. fI'he best trees are cut, often for pur- ‘poses for which an inferior wood would Serve. Firewood probably yields the best.returns for a small acreage and for this purpose rapid-growers such as poplar, ash and elm should be en- couraged, which should make an an- ‘nual growth of from one-half tO'one cord per acre. Basswood, too, will be in increasing demand because of its rapid growth, because it coppices readily and because of its value in small sizes for theâ€" manufacture of ' xceisicr, cocperage stock and other small articles for which the wood is particularly adapted. Maple reprodu- ccs readily, and although not a rapid .grower, it nevertheless yields a sul» 'stantlal revenue when it becomes large enough to tap. Soft woods like spruce. balsam and pine grow much 'more rapidly than hardwoods and 7might be advantageously grown for duel or pulpwood. When the most suitable species have been selected and the weed-trees re- moved, the woodl’ot must then be thin- ned until the crowns of the best- fformed remaining trees are seen to _ barely touch. The third requisite in the scientiï¬c ' farming of the woodlot, is that the cattle be kept out, especially after heavy cutting, when reproduction is most desired. Cattle are just as in- .Jurious to a young crop of tree‘seed- lings as they are to a young crop ‘of ‘grain. They may indeed eat the grass in the woodlot, but they would Just as accu, if not sooner, eat the young and tender hardwood shoots, and the same can he said of sheep. Even ’con’iferous' seedlings are not immune so that certainty in production is only assured by fencing ad the cut- ‘over areas. The longest artiï¬cial watercourse in l'tne world is the Bengal Canal, W9 "mlles in length. ' WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.
