.. . __.........-mm..“ m. ... l l 3 PW M. ._.-..... cycles" Corner. Correspondence of the Gazette Mr. Charles Hepburn, of Fenelon Falls, was in this section last week cutting wood for a few of our farmers. Mr. E. Kendall, of this section, is out on business with his wood cutter, M r. J. C. Parrish has resigned the ‘ .secretaryship of the school board, and Mr. James Slater has accepted the po- sition. ' It is a great mistake that there are not more farmers in the House of Commons at Ottawa, as representa- tives, instead of doctors, lawyers and lumber merchants. One of our farm- ers, who is a Conservative in politics, says that he'does not care how much money is spent at Ottawa if they spend it right; That is an improper view to take ; perhaps there are some people who, don’t know when they are spending it right. v Mr. Hugh_Milloy is home from the N orth-west on a, visit. . Mr."W. Cullis, of Cambourne, is on a business trip here a few weeks. A sleigh-load of Zion people spent a. few hours last, week with Mr. and Mrs. VV. H. Powles. Some of the young people of this section and a number from outside. “tripped the light fantastic toe ’., last Tuesday evening at Mr. R. Parks. About half a dozen young people from Cannington called 'on' Mr. and Mrs. \V. Day on Sunday, Jan. 25th. 0-. Bethel Correspondince of the Gazette. J A party was held at Mr. William Patterson’s on‘ Tuesday euening last, about thirty being present. Dancing and games were kept going until the early hours of the morning, Miss Pat- terson and Master Garnet J unkin sup- plying the music. A very enjoyable night was spent, terminating in a nice supper, and all went home thanking Mr. and Mrs. Patterson for their hos- pitality. _ Another pleasant event was a. party at Mr. Bruce 'Junkin’s the same even- ing, Mr- Wm. Kelly taking a load of ypung people from’Beth'el. Dancing was kept up until the wee sma’ hours, and all had a first class time. o _. ._._._.___.___._ "Fire-killed Spruce Useful The manufacture of violins and sound boxes for talking machines offers two uses that have been found for lire-killed spruce timber, large quantities of which are found in the forests of the Rocky Mountains. A maker of high-grade violins inlaims that fire-killed, Englemann lspruce is the best material he has ,ever found for the manufacture of violin tops. The, value of the wood lies‘ in' its very light weight. its fine straight grain, and its freedom from rosin. Wood for violin tops must be straight-grained and absolutely edge- gralned; that is, cut at -right angles to the annual'rings, which for this use should show from twenty to thirty to the inch. DIED WO0Wâ€"At Fenelon Falls, on Friday, Jim. 30th, 1914, Harriet Acton, wife of Mr. Edwin Wood; aged 76 years, if months and 17 days. NOTICE. Applications will be received up to 12 o‘clock noon-on Monday-next, Feb. 2nd, for the position of Assessor of the Village of Fenofon Falls for the year E. FITZGERALD Clerk= .1914. Address SPENillNG AN ART Those Who Accumulate Wealth Should Dlspoae of It Themselves It is not necessarily a great achieve- ment to accumulate millions. The ac: cumulation is merely a means to an end. If you merely pile up the mil- lions and die before you have done anything w‘th them. or indicated what you want done. your life is a. failure. You have failed to impress your per- sonality upon the world. Somebody else will control the spending of the money, will say whether it is to be spent in luxury or in benevolence, or in the development of some industry, or in the advocacy of a cause. The spender’s personality, not yours, will be impressed upon the world. The lesson would- seem to be that after making due provision for your old age and your family, you should spend your money as you go. In that 'wayyou can control it, devoting it to such enterprises, whether indus- trial or philanthropic or otherwise, as you deem worthy. ’ A millionaire may live as frugal a life as his clerk. But what avails his frugality if he leaves millions to be squandered by an extravagant family in senseless luxury and show. It is true that our present system places _,too much powor in the hands of a man of enormous wealthâ€"more power than any wise man, conscious gof his own limitations, would like‘to 'enjoy. But as the power is there, it must be used; and it is foolish to de- vote every faculty and every pound of energy to accumulating the power, and none to the wise exercise] of the pow/er. Spending is quite as impor- tant as getting.â€"Toronto' Star Week- 13*. TREES DYED'AS THEY GROW Sap Carries Stain Upward Through the Trunk Staining wood by inoculating the growing tree with dye fluids is an in- dustry described in the Independent. The staining solution is introduced into the tree by holes bored through the trunk near’ the ground, and the color spreads with the flow of the sap. The liquid is absorbed very rapidly. A Scotch flr was known to take up three gallons in two days. _When a tree so treated is cut up ’i is often found to be beautifully veined. This is particularly true in the tropics, because of the rapid upward rush of the sap at certain seasons. _ > Only dyes soluble in water will- serve, and many of these are? useiess. One per cent. solutions have been- found to be the'best, and the dye best suited to each wood must be deter- mined in advance by experiment. “Birch was splendidly colored," the article says, "by malachite green and ‘methylene blue, yet eosln produced a very streaky effect. Eosin is not fast to light, another objection. Aniline chloride react: with the lignun of the wood to produce a beautiful yellow. In fact, many chemicals not in them- Selves dyes, are suitable, because they act on compounds in the wood to form colors. A splendid salmon-red may be- secured by using paraphenylenediaâ€" mine. "Tannic‘ acid acts in a different way. After it has penetrated the wood thoroughly the tree may be cut and sawed into boards and fumed with ammonia just as oak, chestnut and any} wood naturally containing tannic acid is fumed. Treated with potassium dichromate, a. rich brown results with a wood which has previously absorbed tannic acid. Thus cheaper woods may be made to equal the more expensive. oak in appearance." - “Bali’s” ,New idea World series baseball contests of nine games, at a reduction in the scale of prices charged for admission, lure favored by Bun B.
