SAVINGS NiWNiiil/ES fOR on) Modern Surgery Has Made a Success of Nerve Grafting ‘ The latest achievement ‘of surgery is the restoration of paralyzed muscles by repair and replacement of injured nerves. When a nerve is severed or severely injured, the muscles supplied by it are cut oif from communication with the brain, the source of vital energy, and become useless. both muscles and that portion of the severed nerve connected to them be- gin to waste and degenerate. Until within recent years it was supposed that this muscle and nerve wasting was incurable, and the unfortunate victims remained without hope of alleviation. Modern surgery, better equipped for the task, essayed ,the problem and demonstrated that if a cut nerve _:was immediately reunited. loss of function did not take place. This initial success led to consider- ation of the question whether it might not. be possible to effect a reunion after a lapse of time and even after had begun to degenerate. Experiments on animals ‘- \wereflconducted on a large scale and ' ne'f'2tiie’-;resnlt of these it was shown that if the degenerated end of the « severedhnerve was joined to the end connected with the brain, the wasted - muscles supplied by'the nerve gradu- This ' operation was later attempted on hu- ' ally regained their powers. man sufferers with excellent results, and some wonderful results were ob- , tained in cases of facial and infantile . paralysis. The work has now” been demonstrated that where, for any rea- possible, a junction can be effected between its degenerated portion and any other cenvenient nerve. A This “news grafting" has been found to give ultimately results almost as good and will bring relief to many suf- ferers. in this war with disease the victories are greater far and more enduring than those found on the battlefield. ' ' V ' Aeroplane Flights V For follOwlng aerdplan‘e'flights an automobile has been built in France with the body completely enclosed but with heavy plate glass windows in the top as well as the sides. Cooling Hot Boxes ' To cool hot boxes on railroad cars slowly and safely without loss of time there has been invented apparatus to drip water upon the heated journals while a-train is in motion. ’ 1836 banking by mail quite as here at our counters. Fenelon Falls Branch WWWWWWW .. ~ -. _ I 5 LIFE AFTER FORTY ' The best half of life is in front of.- the man of 40, if he be anything of, a man. The work he will do will be done with the hands of a. master and- not of a raw apprentice. The trainedi. intellect does not see “men as trees. walking," but sees everything clearly. and in Just measure. The trained‘ temper does not rush at work like a‘ blind bull at a. haystack, but advances with the calm and ordered pace of conscious power and deliberate de: termination. To no man is the world3 so new and the future so fresh as to him who has spent the early years of his manhood in striving to under~ stand the deeper problems of science and life, and who has made some head? way toward comprehending them. To: him the commonest things are rare, and beautiful, both in themselves and ' as parts of a beautiful and intelligent: Whole. Such a thing as staleness in life and its duties he cannot under-e stand. Knowledge is always opening: out before him in wider expanses andl more commanding heights. The plea-é sure of growing knowledge and in-? creasing power makes each year of; his life he», gandmore hopeful tha.‘ the lastifififi ' m won-un- VlOE-ADMlRAL R. H. S.
