FRIDAY, MAY 15, 1914. ‘ Death of Wm. Hetherington'Sr. One of the oldest and most highly v'es'teemed pioneers 'of Verulam Town- ship passed away on Tuesday last in theperson of Mr. Wm. Hetherington, who died at his residence at Fenelon Falls in his 89th yearf ’ Death was due simply to old age, Mr. Hetheringâ€" ton having had the best of health all his life. Deceased was born in Car- lyle, Cumberland, England, on Janu- ary 11th, 1821, and came to Canada He spent six years at Peter- the eXpiration of that time coming to Verulam as foreman for Capt.Wallace, and leased the farm now owned and occupied by Mr._ .Wm. Welch. He afterwards moved» to his farm 'on the fourth concession of Verulam, where he lived untilfive years ago, when he moved to Fonelon Falls. Mr. Hetherw ington was married} in Peterborough by Rev.:sMr.- Rogers ,in the year 1857 to -Miss Margaret.M'cGrcgor, who had come to Canada from Scotland a few years previously. He was a consistent 'member of the Presbyterian Church, and a‘ regular attendant at St. Ans .drew’s during his ldng residenée here. eI-I'e. is survived by Mrs. Hetherington, seven, sons and five daughters. The sons are Isaac and Thomas of Fenelon, David,William andRobcrt of Verulam, James of Alberta, and Charles of To- Fletcher Mitchell of Verulam, Mrs. John Bennett of Winnipeg, and Miss E. A. Hetherington at home. Fortyâ€" five grandchildren and five great- grandchildren also survive him. The funeral on Thursday to the Fenelon ,Falls cemetery was very largely at- tended. ’ ' 9-0 Personal. Hurry Graham of Fenelon Falls was one of the successful graduates at Me Master University this year. A very pretty wedding took place at three“ o’clock on Tuesday, May12th, :at the home of the bride, Oak‘St., Fen- ‘ elon Falls, when Miss A. Aleen Kerr, , elder daughter of the late »Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Kerr, was united in mar- riage to Mr. Alfred H. Terrill of Fen- Bowmauvillc officiated, . assisted by- Rev. John Bedford. The bride looked charming in a gown of ivory brocaded l satin, trimmed with. shadow lace and ‘ pearls, and, carried a bouquet of bridal roses and lilies of the valley.’ The bride was attended by her sister Vivian, who wore a dress of white embroidered voile and carried a bou- q‘uet' of pink and iwhit'e carnations. _ M r.‘ A.VV. Staples, Mrs. Miss Irene Brown Wins Piano.- Miss Irene Brown was the lucky win- ner of the handsome piano offered by Burgoyne & Son to the person securing the most votes by May 13. ' The contest aroused a great deal of interest, and on the closing day, Wednesday, the store staff were kept hustling handing out goods and coupons. The votes obtained by the three leaders were as follows : MissBrown,‘ 5,245,330 ; Miss Allie Car- ley, 4,167,835 ; Miss Irene English, 2,691,655.‘ 0+0 Farewell Meetings. The, meetings of the Salvation Army on Sunday, May 17th, will be the occa- sion of the farewell of Capt. Davis, who for the past nineteen ménths has been in charge of the local corps. ' After being confined to his bed for fourteen years, 'Mr. John Green passed away on the 5th inst. He moved here. from the township of Manvers thirtyâ€" seven years ago. The funeral on Thurs- day was largely atteuded, and was con- ducted by Rev. Messrs. Lord and Web- bcr to the Presbyterian cemetery, where a service was held in the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Green died five years ago. Mrs. R. Skuce of Omemec, Miss Mait- land of Millbrook and Mr. and Mrs. W. Skuce of Ops were among those who attended the funeral. . Mr. and Mrs. Frank Flett of Moose Jaw were visiting friends hcrefor a week and left for their home on Thursday. Mrs. H. Graham of Smith visited friends here for a few days. Mrs. Jas. Flctt, Sin, is on the sick list. Dr. Johnstone is in attendance. Mr. Geo. The beef ring will be in operation again this season. The first beef was delivered on Wednesday morning, the 13th. A change has been made, and in- stead of paying someone to deliver the beef it will be delivered by the patrons in turn. . , ‘ Mr. Jas Fell has had a considerable loss, his Holstein bull taking sick and dying in spite of veterinary aid from the . HeCtor, pepularly known as the Black Knight, and famous for his work in temperance advancement,occurred recently in the United States. He was the son of negro slaves, and by his industry and hard work qualified for-the African Methodist Episcopal Church ministry, later ende- voting himself to platform advocacy of the prohibition cause, in which he was peculiarly effective.
