oooooooooooooooooooooooooo 3 Bancroft Swept by Fire. BANCROFT‘, Ont, July 26. -A de- structive ti1‘,e fanned bv a strong wind, played havoc with the business section or Bancroft tonight. Nine buildings, in- cluding the hotel and postofflce, were destroyed, and a loss of about $75, 000 w as entailed. The buildings and stores destroyed by the fire me as- follows: Bancroft Hotel, Benjamin’ s dr v goods store, Reid &Thompson's general store, Willing's bakery; Walter VanDer \’1‘,)1t barber Sai1 & Mullet hardware; 'l‘hos. Fiench, groce1y; and the postoi‘lice All the structures, with the exception of the hotel, which was built of b1ick, were built entirely of 11ood. Before the volunteer the b1igade could be brought to the scene the bakery was demolished and the flames were spreading down B1 idge street Soon the whole of the m- habitants of the district were fighting the flames, but with little success. Sal- vage operations were commenced, and much property was saved. The guests at the hotel had a narrow escape, a 11 umber of them being at dinner when the fire broke out.
