At the reform meeting on Tuesday even- ing several speakers addressed a large audience, chief among whom was Mr. Geo. Bertram of Toronto. To the statements advanced we will not allude, as they were so extravagantly wide of the truth, a very large number; of those present received them with the usual amount of salt. How - ever, we might say that the attack made by Mr. Thos. Walters on Mr. Geo. Mat- thews was not only uncalled for but very mL _ UIIU W D n -- v ___ rash on the part of the candidate. The] allusion to Mr. Matthews as not being a} beneï¬t to the town was surely dangerous ground for Mr. Walters to tread. With his extensive business, employing a large number of hands and otherwise being an acquisition personally, as well as to the trade of the town, we cannot understand why Mr. Walters, who is only an ofï¬cial cf the Mowat Government ‘ should so far forget himself as to assume to lecture men. who are more beneï¬t to the town in one year that he could possibly be in a quarter of a century, and as to who pays the more taxes, the electors can easily judge for themselves. Ross, Reeve of \Voodville, on the grounds of want of property qualiï¬cation. The qualiï¬cation for a reeve or councillor in that village is $200 of real estate, or $400 as a tenant, over and above incumberances affecting the same. The question to be decided is : Does an incumberance on the property rented by a tenant affect the qualiï¬cation of that tenant? If this proves to be so a landlord could prevent any of his ten- ants- from being members of council by placing a mortgage on his property. It is thought it will be decided that the tenants qualiï¬cation is good, no matter how the property is situated, as the mortgage is not against the tenant. . r that the lacrosse club intend grand celebration here on the IVV-.-VVâ€"â€" _V the visitors, the score being 5 BREVITIES. morningr last the Hockey LINDSAY THURSDAY, FEBRUARY II, [892. at a. dance in the ago in which one of badly out about the last at LINDSAY’S wWE WILL.---THAT’S TO THE POINT IS IT NOT?
