The distance from Athabasca Landing to Hay rtiver is 1,056 miles, and this was covered in twenty-seven days in a scow. Mr. Marsh had with him four trappers, and they carried their provisions in the scow. T e entire distance was done by water, with only one portage of 16 miles. SILVER WEDDING. On Friday. Feb. 4th, quite an interest- ing rc-union took place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. .l. 13. Thompson, Brock, when upwards of seventy relatives and friends assen‘ibled to congratulate the host and hosteSS on the twenty~fifth anniversary of their wedding day. Notwithstanding Lh‘.‘ previous stormy weather. the day bI‘OkP calm and bright and seemed to augura continuance of heaven‘s smile upon them. The house was tastefully decorated with evergreens and was soon accomodating guests from Uxbridue. Whitby. Lindsay, Prince Albert, Sunderland, Wick, Sonya, Crwsswell, Manilla, Lorneville and Pine- dale. A most happy time was spent in reminiscences, some having not met for twenty years. At six o'clock the host and hostess. with those ,of the company who had participated in the event twentv-nvc years ago, led the wa to tea. Much regret was felt that the cv. Mr. Currie of kirkfield could not be present. as he officiated at the marriage in 1873. A lance wedding cake decked the centre of the table, bearing the dates 1873 and 1898 in silver. After tea games were brought forward and enjoyed until midnight, when the nuests returned to their homes well pleased with the evening. The magnifi‘ cent display of silver, which’for quality and beauty of design could scarcely be surpassed, gave evidence of the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. Thompson and their two daughters are held. ____..â€"â€"-â€" PROF. ALEXANDER’S LEC PURE ON POETRY. Albert-st. The fourth lecture of the Collegiate Institute lecture course was given on Friday evening last by Prof. W. J. Alexander, Ph. D.. of Toronto University. Dr. Alexander took for his subject “The Function of Poetry" and delighted the poetically inclined of his audience with his luminous and profound discussion of his theme. He dealt at some length with the form of poetry, showing the affinity of feeling and rhythm, and pointing out that rhythm and metre are fundamental in poetic form. Turning to the poe ic thought the professor showed all subjects were not suitable for poetic treatment, only those that were associated with emotion. The primary aim of poetry is to excite emotion. Poetic treatment in language and the poetic treatment of theme came under discussion and were closely and clearly analyzed. The poet is an artist in words; the poet in treating his theme grasps the essentials and artistically welds them into a harmonious whole. “Prose is the mirror of the mind, poetry of the soul, of man." Rev. Mr. Macfarlanc moved and Squire Macdonnell seconded a vote of thanks, to which Prof. Alexander briefly replied, reminding his audience of the needs of the University of Toronto Col. Deacon discharged the duties of chairman in his usual happy way, and Miss Terese Benson added to her laurels as pianist by her piano solo ..... The next lecture will been Thursday, March 10th, by Rev. H. Some peOple read newspapers aimlessly and for mere pastime, while others read them for profit. Hugh Callendcr, 2. {am er nc ar Napanee, Ont., is of the latter class. People in this country raise many onions which they have been selling to commission men at the rate of 59 lbs to the bushel, but when Callcn- dcr delivered his crop he remembered that he had noticed in the papers an item to the effect that the last legislature had passed an act making 48 pounds a bushel, and he demanded settlement on that basis and got it. He thus saved more in the one transaction than the cost of all the newspapers he ever bought or will buy in hislife. ____._..__â€" PLEASANT SURPRISE Mr Arch.
