In them it was recommended that $200 be panel the Home for the Aged in lieu of lost year’s claims. far three yrrtrs and three times the Sanit‘ l matter has cznne up. The first year Mayor Smyth suspended the Chief and afterward res‘ored him. In the second I Was chzizunn of the police committee a. d f :und the force in very bad Condi< ion. Tha' year Mayor Taylor suspended the Chief and restored him. The suggestion that he :ake the gold cure was ridiculed by both him and some councillors. He said he did u )t require to use such means and that if he ever touched liquor again he would resign. He did drink but has not resigned. Lxst fall he receivedfper» mission to leave town and bring back a man from the Northwest and when he returned I saw he had been drinking. I said nothing but hoped that he would Straighten up. It went on till February when I called the committee and the Chief. He was given a fair chance but‘ you know the condition in which he came ‘ before us and you you accuse us of stab- ‘biog him in the back. At that time we idecrded that a radical change was neces- isary and called for the resignation of both police. The resignations did not come. In the meantime part of this council for some unknown reason have changed their minds. Ald. Crandell stated things concerning the Chief that should insure any officer’s expulsion. Aid. Lennon said he would vote er dis- miesnl. He told the chief so as well. Both these men have gone back on their action in committee. It cannot be that they have found the charges untrue far they are plain to 811;. I am sorry for Mr. __AL-_ LA- A.---2_ Mr. H. O’Leary asked to explain that $100 had to be paid Into the legislature- before the Sylvester and Kitchener bill was touched y.Mr Hopkins had deposited $50 and he had done llkewlse. Hence the mayor’ a order. ChairmZm Sootheran explained that he had not yet presented the report referred to hence it was not signed. He opined that inasmuch as the $50 was spent for services ordered by council no question of authority should be mised. The auditors report for January referred to an unsigned report of the finance cum- mtttee and an) order for $50 by the mayor which is a larger amount than may be covered by an order. The market cierk enriched the (.x- cheque! by $81.64 last month and Cmtf Bell did likewise up to $74. -__ .'â€"__---v‘â€" The street commissioner presented his report and addressed Various intermgq. rions to council. They were after this manner: Are the sewers begun last; year so be continued this year?‘ Is any grano- litbic to be laid? Is any sidewalk to be pub down? Are tenders for cedar and plank to be asked? At the first few meetings I found the position a pleasant one and thought the harsh name given councillt [in the past was undeswved. At t“ :early meetings of committee Aid. Cran- dell harped continually on dismissing the police and called us cowards because we did not take the matter up. At lasr evidence was presented that we could not disregard and we decided on action with no dissenting voice. Ald. Lennon was then absent. I am sorry that the Mayor charged us with hitting behind anyone’s back. I am sorry now that I have lost. confidence in the council that the thine was not brought up at the next couizci: meeting.
