The report of the finance. committee was read and adopted: The Baird’adjourned. Death of Mr.‘Willia’ifiBlackwell. Wears this week called upon to record the death "of Mr. William Blackwell, which event took place last Sunday after- noon at his residence on Bond street. Mr. Blackwell had reached the age of 68 years; bdfi'uhtil Within the {Bat eight or‘ nine months when he began to show signs of the disease which resulted in his death on Sunday last, he had the appear- ance and vigor of a man many years younger., For..,the past few. ,weeks.-a change jforfthe better 'had area- place. and hopes were entertained of his ulti~ mate recovery. The. announcement of his death came therefore unexpectedly, and was the subject vof profound regret throughout the entire community. Mr. Blackwell was essentially a man of active temperament, industrious and perseveringr and during his lifetime acquired consider- able means ; but he was kind-hearted and strictly honorable in his dealings, qualities which won him the confidence and esteem of all who came in contact with him. In politics he Was a liberal- conservative, and at all times took an active and intelligent interest in all im- portant political questions. In the death of Mr. Blackwell, the community has lost a valuable citizen, and a wide circle of friends an esteemed member. The funeral on Tuesday was a very large one, testifying to the respect in which the deceased was held. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire com- munity. I Stammering. The \VATCHMAN can substantiate the facts Contained in the following extract \ taken from the Naturtzl Voice for March 1890. ' ' * ‘ For the past seven weeks the nine year old Son of one of our wealthiest and most influént-il business men has been under a rigid Course of voice training at Symphony Hall with a. view to overComc an almost hopeless case of stammeriiig. Suffice it to say that in eight weeks from the time this child was put under training he will return to the public school With as good a use of his vocal organs in speaking and reading as the average scholar. ’ The lad referred to above is a son of Mr. Richard Sylvester proprietor of the large Sylvester Harvest \Vorks of this place, and not only is the restoration of the child’s speech fully appreciated by every one acquainted with the family, but is a verypositii'e evidence that Mr. Church, under whose vocal training this remark- able cure has been effected, fully under- stands his business as a teacher of Voice Culture. Y. M. C. A. The young men who were present. at the Young Men's Christian Association last Tuesday evening spent a most pleas- ant and enjoyable evening. Mr. Stevens, science master of the Collegiate Institute gave an evening of experiments with electricity. These experiments never fail to enthuse great interest so remarkable and wonderful are their workings. Roxa-SERVICEâ€"â€"Mr. Church will con- duct a. song service next Sunday at 4 15 in theY. M. C.
