ROBSON, Grocer, Kent st., Lindsay.â€" 15-4. â€"Commissioner Bees and Brigadier Philpott received a loyal reception at the Salvation Army Barracks on Friday last. The meeting was of characteristic Army style. Officers and soldiers from surrounding towns also taking part. The Commissioner held the attention of his large audience for nearly an hour as he gave some of his experience of the Army’s early days. The Holiness meeting in the afternoon was also well attended by Christian people of all denominations. Mr. Edmund Yeigh, representative of the Daily Globe, has been in town for Some days arranging for the appearing of the illustrations of the public buildings and business places of Lindsay, which are to appear at an early date. Mr. Yeigh is a thorough business man, and has a court- eous and pie-451119; manner of doing busi- ness. He has been in Connection with the Globe for twelve years, and we may ven- ‘ ture to say that the work he is now 1 engaged on will give the utmost satisfac- tion to our townspeople. He has received the utmost encouragement throughout, so that the coming number will contain up- ] wards of forty pictures in connection with Lindsay. According to announcement, Miss Phelps, the well known temperance worker, lectured for the \V.C.T.U. in the lecture room of the Cambridge street Methodist church on Monday eveningr. The audience was good as to number, and still better as to character, representing; the cultered Christian life 0‘ the commun- ity. The lecture was worthy of the audience, and worthy of any temperance occasion. It was accurate in historical statement. it was logical in argument, and it was eloquent and earnest in utterance. It is simple fact to say the audience was delighted, and intellectually and morally editied while sitting: under the spell of Miss Phelps' address of an hour. Miss Phelps’ home is near St. Catharines, where she was born and educated. From very, early life she has been- in the temperance ‘ movement, and a few years ago, when feeling it a duty to prepare for public life, she went to the Philadelphia. School of Oratory, where she received a thorough training for platform work. Her leccures reveal both culture and character, and exhibit the heart and hope of a woman consecrated to the redeeming and savmg of human life. Miss Phelps will be more than welcome to Lindsay again. During Seed Time, Attention Two large audiences greeted the pres- entation of the beautiful sacred Cantata, Esther, in the Opera House on Thursday ‘1 and Friday evenings of last week. Our i Citizens had for several weeks been look- ing forward to the occasion, and doubtful if Lindsay audiences have ever been more gratified with what they both heard and saw. It is but scant praise to say that the presentations were in every particular highly creditable toMr. J. H. Ketcham, under whose admirable methods and tuition the entertainment was prepared, and to the young ladies and gentlemen who tOok part. As an amateur perfor- mance it was a surprising success, and testified to the excellent talent both musical and dramatic we have in our .midst. The leading personaiions were-â€" .Mr. John Hart The King. .. The Queen ............. Miss Lizette Silver Human ............ Mr. Duncan McSWeyn Zerish ............. Miss Blanche Walters Mordecai ........ Mr. N. Lamont Mordecai's Sister. . .Miss Syrcs (Janetville) Prophetess ........... Bliss Teenie Jackson High Priest ............. . .Mr. W. Robson In all, the parts were well taken, and the dramatic renderingexceedinglycorrect. The minor personations throughout were equally well sustained, whilst the choruses l were almost perfechevidencing admirable 3 training. The splendid Costumes, which s were supplied from Mr. Frank McKenna’s - establishment, Toronto, Completed the e- efiect», everything combining to give ebest entainment of the kind ' d by a Lindsay audience. Butcher, are entitled to special mention. Mr. Ketcham is to be congratu- lated upon the success of his tuition in Lindsay, and it is to be hoped he will shortly again return to give the musical and dramatic element in our midst the benefit of his services and the public another enjoyable entertainment.
