The prince was in larizing his establishment. With an eye to testing and developing the literary ability of the community, Mr. Robson offered three val- uable prizes for the best three essays on why people should deal at the West End Three Stores. THE WATCHMAN was appointed judge, and as a result had a large budget of essays to read on arecent afternoon. After much care we were able to select the lucky essayists. The audience was large, and com- prised the musical people of the town, irrespec- tive of creed, in fact we have never seen a more representative gathering. After prayer by the pastor and an anthem by the church choir, the visiting artists were introduced. It may as well be said here that no report can give any idea of the deluge of music and song that rolled wave after wave through the great audience-room during the evening. Miss Smith of Oshawa, although quite a young- looking girl, delighted everybody with her performance on the violin. From this instru- ment Miss Smith produced music that was enjoyed by the public and praised by the critic, for we have learned that the best judges pro- nounce her work of an high order. Miss Hansen, of the same town, came highly recommended and amid great expectations. She fulï¬lled them all. Her singing is extremely artistic, and her voice has an expressive flexibility and sweetness that renders her interpretations singularly effective and pleasing. Without effort at volume or display Miss Hansen is an able exponent of the power and beauty of classic composition. The peculiar purity and richness of her voice combine with ,A_-_ ..j nnnnnnnnnnn On run-u, â€".._ ---,__ee, , a rare charm of manner and expression to‘ render each of her selections a thorough treat for lovers of vocal melody. Mr. Warringtcn of Toronto sustained a reputation to which our remarks can add nothing in a number of mag- niï¬cent baritone solos. In saying this much for our visitors we wou‘d not dead at all from the merit of our own musicians who assisted. Miss Nellie Comeil’s singing never roused greater enthusiasm or was more deserv- ing. Miss Gregory’s work on the piano was masterly, and we regret our inability to do justice to her skill in handling that instrument. Sufï¬ce it to say that persons to whom matters of touch, technique, repose and expression are familiar topics, were delighted with Miss Gregory’s pla 'ng. Mr. Morse, the church organist, contributed largely to the complete- ness and pleasure ol the occasion by his splendid performances on the pipe organ. All together too much cannot be said for this concert. and among not the least gratifying features was its ï¬nancial success. Rain fell on 2 days.
