Obituary. On Sunday last one of Lindsay’s oldest residents passed away, in the person of Mr. J. J. Wheeler in his 73rd year. Mr. Wheeler was, before the fire of 1861, in business in this town.but like many others ‘ that calamity swept nearly all his property ‘ away. Since that time he has been em- Ployed chiefly at book-keeping, and has for a number of years acted as returning lOFficer and auditor for the town. Mrs. Wheeler died a. few months ago. On Saturday morning High Constable Bell laid information against a man named W.Greenaway,on a charge of setting fire to the barns of Benjamin Wright, in the 13!: con. of Ops, a report of which was given in last week’s issue. The warrant was placed in the hands of County Constable Foster. who arrested Greenaway. He was brought before P. M. Deacon on Saturday, and remanded for one week. Mr. W. Houston. M.A., of Toronto, will take a prominent part. A first-class pro- gram has been prepared and an enjoyable time is expected. A meeting will be held in the Collegiate Institute on Thurs- day evening, commencing at 8 o’clock, to which the public are cordially invited. The meeting will be under the direction of Mr. Houston, M.A. The Chimney erected for Messrs. Sadler ‘ Dundas Co’s. engine house at the mills, ‘ was finished on Monday last. It is one hundred feet high, and ten feet square at the base. It was built by a Mr. Smith of Galt, and contains about fifty thousand bricks. The foundation is of stone. Mr. Smith laid thebrick in exactly eleven days, for which he was paid $305. He did not use scaffolding having laid the brick from the inside using scantliizg cross pieces to stand upon. From there they made their way into A. Doran’s liquor store, from which they stole a number of bottles of whiskey, two boxes of cigars and a quantity of postage stamps. On the day following Chief Bell arrested ayoung man named Wm. Bell on ‘ suSpicion of being the guilty party. On being searched the constable found a number of postage stamps on him. Later on he arrested a young fellow named Jas. Barry, who was employed at Workman’s livery stable. where he found a. portion of the whiskey and cigars. They were brought before I‘. M. O’Leary and re- manded till Tuesday last, when they plead- ed guilty and were sentenced to one year n the Central Prison at hard labbr.
