Usutmmâ€"On Thursday, April 29th. at 11 o’clock p.m.. our vicinity sustained a widespread vacancy by the death of a. most respected citizen, Mr. Samuel Roddy. Lagrippe, with camplicitlons, was the cause of death. Several days before death the attending phyai’cians warned the relatives that the sufferer was journeying toward the bourne from whence no traveller returns, and time each member of the family was enabled to be near to lend their loved companion- ship to their beloved parent as he drifted down into the valley of the shadow of death. By his demise our neighborhood sustains the loss «f an estimable cizizen, his family a lovizg father, his widaw an ever helpful and trustworthy husband. In the hour of griefjmay each member of [the bereaved circle recall to memory the ’words, “ Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them above; and let thy widow’s trust in me.” Spam to the WW? Walker, Walters cf -â€"Portngal has announced its neutral-‘ ity and the Spanish Atlantic squadron waeoompelled to sail from, the Cape Verde Islands. It sailed west and its destination is a cause of anxiety to the American government. It is expected to 'arrive in Cubanvwaters and give battle to admiral Sampeon’s squadron, if so the result Of that battle will decide the fate of Spain. - - .1 n~_._ Ln... UL ”VIIIâ€"- â€"â€"The expected crash in the East has come, with disastrous results to Spain. Commodore Dewey’s squadron completely destroyed the Spanish fleet in Manila harbout 99’?! M99?” morning. Three ‘â€"â€"-â€"- ._A_n Luv-n.- can'guns; The United States fleet enter- ed Manila bay at five o’clock, and anchoring before Cavite, the ships took up their positions in line of battle. The forts on shore at once opened fire on the United" States ships at long range, and the Spanish flees, anchored off Cavite. immediately followed with their heavy cues. Commodore Dewey’s flagship, the Olympia, then signalled the rest of the American fleet to draw closer in shore, and soon afterwards the United States; ship: opened a terrific cannonade. After half an hour’s hot fighting. Commodore Dewy’s ships moved out of the range of the lighter Spanish guns and con‘inued the bombardment with big guns with terrible efiect. Twenty minutes later the Olympia agair signalled the Other American ships to draw in at close quar:ers, and once more a rapid and in- cessant cannonading began. This terrific bombardment soon ended the fight. One after the other the Spanish vessels were silenced, and three of them caught fire, including Admiral Montij 0’s flagship. c--.“ A n n‘._ p , United States vessels. The admiral at .once transferred his flag to the Isle de Cuba. One Spanish vessel was sunk and several were run ashore to escape capture. lâ€"Commodore Dewey's attention was now directed to the land batteries, which he silenced after a brief and energetic bombardment. The battle lasted an hour ‘and a half, and it was agreat and terrible spectacle. ; â€"The S aniards fought bravely against superior orce and suffered heavy losses. Four hundred Spanish are reported killed, including two commanders. Their loss by fire is also very probably great. The Spaniards would not give in. and when the American fleet returned to Cavite some shots were still fired from the forts on shore, but the United States ships ‘poured in such a terrific cannonade that liurther resistance was impossible. The American ships were apparcnlly uninjur- ed. Commodore Dewey’s attacx was well carried out. The manoeuvres of his squadron were a fine sight, and the navi- gation of the bay by his ships was a remarkable feat of seamanship, avoiding as they did successfully the numerous shallows. â€"The cable is cut not. far from Manilla and no despatches can be received. ~1ndignation is strong in Marid against, the government The mob did some damage and the city is now under miiitary control.
