The Editor of the W'arder had the hardihood to enter a protest against the award of the printing committee of the County Council last winter, by which the County printing was given to the Watch- man. The public who know the high character of the members who constituted that committee will have some idea of the sublimity of cheek exhibited by the Editor of the IVarcler in calling in question their decision. The “protest†was dis- posed of at the late meeting of the council, and the TVarder most refreshingly sat - upon. The IVarder’s tender was inter- lined and unintelligible, and would have A been thrown out Without any consider- 4 ation had it not been for the courtsey of j the gentlemen against whom the Editor 1 of the IVa'rde'r dared to utter insinuations at the “investigation.†The fact of it is, mental reservation constitutes a large part of the IVardar tenders, and the public may judge of the cost of such jesuitical tenders, if accepted, from the fact that the last time the IVarcler’s (1886) was accepted the County paid $1000 or $1100 for the same amount of printing for which they now pay about $300. The Warde'r had the town printing for 1888, and the jesuitical interlining of the tender was partially successful, and the town paid the piper; but the accurate business heads who look after the printing for the County are not so easily gulled, and the WATCH- m got the contract as a matter of course. At the January session of the County Council the Editor of the Warder got a few of his admirers in that body to limit the circulation in order to shut out the VVATCHMAN. But- the VVATCEMAN had been _ growing . all‘ along, and not ..9 J L-An :“Arln_ ISUQ 9 rams-1.55 ] character of the that committee sublimity of ‘ Editor of the H their decision. 0118 H Aauuaun... _ had been growing all along, and not dying as the IVarder had been indus- triously and privately circulating, and came in ï¬rst, swallowing the plum at which the Warder had made so desperate a clutch. The VVATCHMAN is now holding the County printing for its second year, and Will continue to do so for the future â€"-for the County’s good. It has also in charge the town printing as well. Its tenders are just what business men dew light inâ€"straight, aboveboard, and not resembling an interliners translation of some unknown tongue. But the “most unkindest cut of all†to the IVarder is that the public printing contracts should Uul' CIILCL’PLJOU, 1v ADJ n v-.. .___V to that journal as disturbing an element 3 as a “red rag to a bull.†Nothing will make the erratic French blood in the veins of the IVarder eï¬'ervesce like unto the mention even of our name. But thanks to the encouragement and support we have been receiving at the hands of our patrons the bitter and unmanly 12-1. _A Lac-u: 1191‘ +n UUL I, hostil'ty against which we have had to contend, has only strengthened our forces. The following is what the Committee on Printing says about “ that protest†: “Your committee have considered the protest of Mr. S. Hughes against the award of the contract for printing and advertising, by the special committee and have examined the tenders received by the committee. Your committee beg to express approval of the action of the special committee in awarding the con- tract to Mr. J 08. Cooper.†Victoria County Council. rm: WARDEN’S ADDRESS. The June session of the Victoria county council opened Tuesday afternoon with a large attendance of the members. The . warden occupied the chair and delivered the following message on county matters : ‘ You have been assembled to-day in conformity with the standing rules of this council for the transaction of the general business of the June session. Since last meeting of the council I was asked to join the county attorney in an order upon the treasurer to cover expenses of sending the chief of police of the town of Lindsay to Manitoba for the purpose of bringing back to this county one Playfair, who it was charged, had committed forgery within this county to the extent of $60 or there- abouts. I refused to comply on the grounds- that the crime was not of that serious character contemplated by the act. revised statutes of Ontario, 1889. chapter 83. On the following day I was requested to join in a similar order upon the treasurer for funds to send a constable to Kingston, Ontario, to mi: and bring back to this county a man who it was alleged had ob- tained from a merchant in the town of Lindsay goods under false pretences to the Adjourned Inquest. I hope that you will be pleased to express your views in relation to these cases so that not only myself for the remaining portion of this year, but future wardens will have something to guide them when demands of this nature are made upon them under the act in 1 question. During the latter part of May I received a letter from Mr. J ames Graham of Garden township acquamting me with the unsafe condition of the Narrows bridge of that township and requesting me to go there to see the bridge and stating that he had put some planks over some of the bad .- g- 7 3 LL-L T Boa nn recei'ot Of Garden, enclosmg Mr. Graham’s letter and asking Mr. Taylor to go and ins ect the bridge and report at this, the une session.
