The regular meeting of the city fathers was held in the council chamber on Monday evening. All the members were presenlt With Mayor Smyth in the chair. The "docket†was very light, indeed, but as it turned cut did not mean any saving of; time, as the “fathers†aired their eloquence on questions in and out of order until nearly 11 p.m.' The attend- ance of f‘benchers†was also light, and as the night were away they lost heart in the proceedings and took their departure. STREETS AND BRIDGES. Dep.-reeve Touchburn stated that he ‘had met Inspector Campbell, who had been appomted by the Ontario govern- ment to systematize road miking in the towns and municipalities of the province, and had shown the system pursued in Lindsay. Mr. Campbell expressed him- Self well pleased to see that they were moving out the sidewalks and thus mak- ing the streets narrower. In speaking, of dra nage he stated it was an important matter, but was not suitable to all sods. He expressed his willingness to come to Lindsay at any time, if invited, and give the council the beneï¬t of his experience in street improwments. The dep.-reeve added as the treasurer’s statement and the auditor's report showed the expenditure to date in his department he did not deem it necessary to furnish a report. , - - - n “1- A11 llUUIII ll ‘JUVUUUIJIJ .v _..__ _,~ The mayor stated that Mr., Campbell was also able to give them estimate-sand plans on public works and thought the chairman should invite him to visit Lindsay. _ . n . .I , _l__.-1J :m'v:"l\ “lung’s-J | Reeve Ray thought they should invite Inspector Campbell to come to Lindsay when the County council were in session. Bryans’ cattle broke out of their pasture ‘in the country and on their way home were captured by the Ever-Watchful- Wilson and impounded. As there had Ibeen no carelessners on his part he per- mitted the cattle to go free on Mr.‘ Bryans paying the ofï¬cer’s fees. I STILL IN THE DARK. Reeve Ray opposed the expendirure for improvements to council chamber. He was not on the committee, and failed t0 seethe immediate necessity fur the change. It would add materially m the appearance of the room. but he thought they would be paying dear for It. Coun. Sootheran showed that it was ixnpemtive that certain improvements Would have to be made and explained that it was necessary in order to have the ram properly lighxed. The coilection of outstanding taxes was ex- tended to July 6 h. Reeve Ray thought there was a pro-‘1 vision under the by-law rendering icl necessary to apply any surplus from de-‘ bemures to the smkmg fund and enquired if the chairman had looked into it. He also referred to the charity grant. and ex- plained that. it was hardly likely that another account: like this would come before them. Couu- Graham stated that he felt like apologizing for the report as the refer- ence to the charity expenditure and fully explained the morion. The report was adopted. FIRE AND WATER. Coun. Brady said that he had consulted local electricians who were willing to give full details as to cost if the town were going into the matter. A ï¬fteen box system would cost about $400. They had also enquired as to cost of hind wheels for hose wagon but had not yet received their ï¬gures. He had also advised changing hydrant at the council chamber to some more beneï¬cial place. Cont). Graham could not see that any economy in a change of this kind, as the interest on the amount necessary for ex- tending mains would be more than the hydrant rental. ‘On motion a deputation consisting of Messrs. W. FlaVelle, F. C. Taylor and A. F. D. Macgachen were heard. Mr. Flavelle, on behalf of the citizens interested. appeared before the ccuncil in connection v~ irvh the prsxpused expenditure of $3000 herween the Wellington and Lindsav-st. brzdges by the Ontnriï¬ Gov- ernmeul. On enquiry from a town like Lindsay. On enquiry Irom c boatmen he was convinced that it was ‘ impossible for the steamer to reach the upper wharf. He, with many leading citizens, would like the council to pass a resolution asking she provincial govern- ment to expend at least a portion of the proposed grant lower down the river. In company with several citizens they had went over the ground and thought that by taking the old Eva wharf they could get the accommodation desired. He had talked with Capt. Lane at this pomt and was told that the Esturion or any other boat could come up to that point. The present wharf was not suitable and there were many inconveniences which they could not evade. There was the bridge and locks, and when logs came up they could- not at by. Then were scows at the Kenna y and Maunder wharfs which Would naturally interfere with the line steamer. He thought that if the citizens showed their desire for a change 1n the expenditure of the grant the govemnjent would not oppose it. Mr. F. C. Taylor was hot in a. position to ï¬ve an opinion as to where the wharf should be built. A great dual of money had been expended and the desired con- venience had not be obtained. Before taking any action they should go carefully into. the matter. and If they decided that: a new wharf Was necessuy. then he felt sure the local government would not oppose it. V rIr)ep.-reeve Touchhurn thought the money should be expended so as to enable the line boat to Come as near the centre of the town as possible: Reeve Ray explained that they had to consider freight as well as passenger trafï¬c. At the upper wharf they had no land for a storehouse, whlle at ï¬end-st. with the river front and the Mauuder lot land was available. If the matter was laid befure the government there would be little or no trouble in having the change made. -. "EJJVILHBEQdy thought that the east side of the river would be more suitable.
