THE great sweep of victory claimed by the Globe, after a week’s medita- tion and a counting of noses, has developed into a real victory for the Patrons and Independents, who now control the balance of power. This is as it ought to be, and undoubtedly great good will come of it. It is but the beginning of the end of extreme partyism, let us hope, of matters Inasmuch as the Reform political. minority in East Victoria and the Conservative minority in \Vest Vic- toria are practically disfraiichised by {tat most cowardly and disgraceful of- ad acts, “the Patrons, as a party. in both these con- stituencies, had an almost insurmount- able task to perform in the face of party majorities. in either riding, of 400 to 500. And when we considerl the many mean devices employed, and the dishonorable tactics resorted to hv v both political parties during the late 1 gerryniander.’ The campaign, need we wonder at the result ! candidates might have polled more \Vhilst our respective Patron votes in some polling sub-divisions in éither riding, yet in others each did fairly \Vhen Oljijec’s of the Patron movement arel better l chiefly composed of the farmdrs well. the aims and understood by the masses, and l . . , , : the great industrial classes, and xvneni the wealth producing element in Society am fully alive to the fact that \__’_________________â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"-â€"‘__â€"_Tâ€"â€"_- â€"â€"" The Patrons Stand. l Where THE Farmers’ Sun, which is the or- gan of the order, in This week’s publishes an editorial outlining the pos- ition of the Patron members, and the course to be pursued. The 'declaration reads as follows: In all measures that have been dis.- cussed before the country. such as the payment of salaries to county officials and their election by the people, the removal of the Lieutenantâ€"Governor’s perquisits of about $23,000 a year, and the observance of greater economy in public service, the amendement of the assessment laws which now favor the professions and burden the masses and others, Patron representatives will vote solidly in the house in the interests of their constituents. Many other meas- ures will directly or indirectly affect the people in the rural sections to a greater or lesser degree, and on all such questions it will be the duty of Patron members to act unitedly as far as pos- sible, after havmg discussed the ques- tions in their own caucus. ‘Where divisions occur, as they may occur, on any new questions, they will not be occaSioned by party considerations, but because our representatives aim to be men of ideas who support measures Mid not men or parties. When Pa- trons divide it will not be as partizans. This is the true Patron policy, and it is one that commends itself to thought- ful and independent electors every- where. Partisan politicians are too frequently the serfs of unprincipled leaders. There may be men now or hereafter who receive the confidence of Famous and betray the trust re- posed in them by becoming partisans and obeying the party whip, but when the party caucus has either a direct or indirect power over a Patron member, that man will be disowned by our order and handed over to the enemy. Such is the policy of Paâ€" tionism, and therein lies its power. M The Grand PreSIdent’s Address to the Electors. The. Provincial contest is over and the election of seventeen representatives upon the platform of the Patrons of Industry has proven to the Province that the masses have determined that their interests shall be no longer made second to those of the few who assume to have the right to rule the land. That a greater number of Patrons have not succeeded in the contest which is just completed is neither a matter of surprise nor discouragement. When it is eon- sidered that our organization has been but four years in existence, and that we had arrayed against us parties of historic age with perfect organization, with the picstige and power of governments, Dominion and provincial, and led by men of the distinguished ability, skilled in all 'he wiles of statescraft and entrenched in n aver and assisted in the campaign by a host i f officials, federal and provincial, it is a marvel that the toilers did not, as of old, in the end respond to the party u hip. A victory has bet-n gained, the equal of whicn has never bean known in the his- tory of Canada. That hundreds of men in each of over half the ccmstituenries of y issue evening.
