As generally understood, at present. remarks Dr. Lodge in a contribution to the Engineering Magazine, lightning is an oscillatory discharge of enormous energy, which no copper rod, however thick and long, can really dispose of harmlesslyâ€"experimentally it can be shown, in fact, that who†a lightning discharge takes place, 8Vcn down such a rod as this, sparks may fly from it to all conductors near, capable of set- ting ï¬re to any explceive compound or gas leak which the) -nay chance to en- counter. He therefore recommends for the protection of ordinary buildings the placing of a. wire along all gables and down all the corners, with perhaps a. few in between along any prominent features, so as to enclose the building in a sort of wire network; any metal serves equally well for the conductor, conductivity being unimportant in com- parison with durability »; points or pro- jections to the sky are useful to take the violeme of the direct flash at its point or imidence in a. cheap and con- spicuous manner, and earth connec- tions are desirable to save the founda- tion, the soil and the pipes therein from being damaged. New Sng. 1: Process. The new sugar procea. as accomplishâ€" ed by the Drummond machine, is de- scribed in the Barbadoes Herald, and is briefly as follows : The cane is cuO into lengths of tour or ï¬ve inches, and pass- es, without being touched by hand, into a cylinder where it is crushed. When all the juice possible has been ex- pressed by a. powerful pressure, the megass is dollied and shbjected to a steam bath, in order to extract any juice left in the cells of the cane; the pure juice and tie diluted juice are carried into seperLte tanks by suction pumps, and the megass by a mechani- cal arrangement ‘5 discharged by the crushing cylinder, to be used as fuelâ€" thc whole or the \Iperations of feeding crushing, discharging and pumping be- ing performed by one man. The advan- tages claimed for this machineâ€"a device which is also said to be coually suitable for the trertment of bcet rootâ€"are very important, including the complete extradition of the sugar at one operation, a minimum risk of breakdown, as there is no gearing ox- revolting shaft, and a number of ma- chines can be worked at considerable distance from each other by one hy- draulic and steam instaliati- 4 . As to Fast Thinking. In an essay in the Forum Mr. Freder- ick Harrison says that the late An- thony Trollope once told him that he began his literary work at half past 5 o’clock every, morning and “for three hours I regularly produce 250 words every quarter of an hour.†That is, he composed at the rate of 1,000 words an hour. Mr. Trollope must have written with surprising rapidity it he wrote long hand ; and he must have thought in haste if he wrote shorthand. An ex- pert penman may write over 1,000 words an hour all day long it he has not to concoct thea thought as he wields the pen; but for a man to write and to think up 1,000 words each hour for three hours running every morning, just after Betting out of bed. we mean words with loddsterâ€"I say, old fellow, can you lend us a. pair of scales for a few days?
