Sin, 1 was approached last night by the Mavor. and again this morning by several of the leading citizens with the query, â€"“ What was the matter with the pressure during the progress of the fire last night?” Permit me to state most emphatically that there was nothing wrong with the pressure of one hundred pounds per square inch'on Kent St, or any exuivalent locality in the town, and this pressure was furnished all through the night. The trouble lies not with the waterworks, but in failure of the fire department to turn in an alarm on leaving the fire hall, in leaking joints along the line of hose. in a wrong use ot the Siamese coupling, and in a It aking valve in that couplinw. Ever since I t0ok charge of these works. the tire pressure has been fully up to the contract figure. The citizens of this town may rest assured that so long as I may remain here pressure willalways be forth- icomine if we are only notified in proper [time from the fire hall. The Fire at Dovey . bon’s Mill. To the Editor 0/ the IVuMnnan. Lindsay Sept. 25th. Sunâ€"Kindly allow me to say that the Dominion government are now spending millions of dollars in building'locks on our inland waters in order to make them navigable for steamboats and barges, 1 .md have nearly completed a distance of 1 about} 150 miles, bagining at Lakefield,l to Cobeconk and Port Perry, which is attracting considerable interest along the ‘ route. and so far as it has been built the work is substantial and good and very costly, Yet the system of using or Controlling the water is very unsatisfac- tory. as the sawlogs. raft and mill owners now monopolise the right of navigation. They have used up the water on and along this route by lifting the stop-logs in order to float their sawlogs so that it has drawn it so low that our steamboats that only draw three or four feet of water are now dragging on "1e rock and mud bottom of the canal, whilst the orders passed in council forbid mill owners from using water below the level of the dam, they now do as they like. and if this state of things is allowed to continue the sooner these works are stopped the better it will be for the countryand seamboat men as well.
