Accorrlinly Sunday night last Mr. Campbell read for his text Prov. 7:22 “As an ox goeth to the slaughter,” and then reading it a second time, added so; 808th the mm to the bar-room. He described the bar-room as an institution legislated into being and form by our Christian civilization, the very first Principles of which are, the protection of human life and the promotion of man’s Welfare. He denounced in scathing terms the inconsistency of governments which legislate for the protection of human life against disease and danger, and then legalize this engine of destruction to waste 9“ population, and antagonize every true mterest of men. The divisions of his “blect were : let the slaughter of human life. 2nd the slaughter of home. 3rd the slaughter of virtue. Last Sunday Rev. Dr. Parsons gave an intensely helpful address on “the Holy Spirit." There were 180 men present. â€"â€"'I‘he 23rd annual convention of the Y.M.C,A. of Ontario and Quebec is wnnounced to be held in Montreal, Jan. 26-29, 1893. The daily attendance of young men at the rooms is most gratifying. The membership roll is growing larger and the committees are taking hold of the work with vigor. â€"A special meeting of the board of directors was held on Tuesday evenmg to deal with some matters requiring immedi~ ate attention. A compendium of statistics cover- ng a multitude of important subjects. A book of reference for all Canadians and Americans, and having a special value for all strangers in all lands desirous of know- ing about Canada and Canadians. The nomination of candidates for the various municipal offices for 1893 takes place on Monday, 26th inst, and the election on Jan. 2nd, the Monday follow- ing. There does not apnoar to be as ‘much interest taken in these matters so far, as on former occasions, which is perhaps, evidence that the ratepayers are, fairly well satisfied with what has beenl done during the year. It is to be hoped, however, that between now and nomina- tion day a sufiicient number of good can- didates may be prevailed upon to stand. Unless proper encouragement is given to such in time, some of the better oflices may go by default to the wrong parties.
