Independent In all Things and Influenced In None. To rightly estimate the work which a well-told falseheod can accomplish in a given time is perhaps among those things which‘do not come under the statisti- cian's attention, at the same time there is no influence which can in so short a space disintegrate the social fabric or create such wide-spread confusion as a well-told falsehood or misrepresentation Our readers may possibly not understand our reasons for dipping into the philoso~ A phv of falsehood nor is it a very agree- able subject for consideration. particu- larly when applied to those who have been looked upon as friends. Since the recent nominations and elections for the municipal council of Beaverton the editor oiAshis journal has been made the re- ceipient of no end of falsehood and mis- representation by certain interested , parties with a view, no doubt. of injury to us and our business. We have been pointed out as the head centre of the ‘ Scott-‘Act prosecutions which have taken place in this village lately as well as being the source from which all the dirty remarks and foul insinuations which have from time to time been current have emanated. We have been warned that our persistence in the above course would certainly produce retaliation and in other ways we have been given to understand that we are particularly: offensive to a certain class in the com- munity. All this would not be incon- sistent with our expectations if justiï¬ed but when we state that we are complete- ly innocent of each and every charge laid to our credit we must bee to be ex- cused from quietly accepting the same. Only Wednesday last witnessed an inci-, dent which to us spoke eloquently of the position in which we have been placed. when an irate individual came into our sanctum and flourished several prosecu- tion papers before our face and charged us with complicity in the affair. Now we beg it to be understood that although we are naturally of a peaceable disposi- tion and little inclined to seek a “cases belli" with any. yet we are not preâ€" pared to be walked over in this arrogant and offensive manner and the sooner this {act is recognized the better it will be for all parties. This journal has never hesitated to make its views known on every question which has come before the communitv for consideration and in the matter of the Scott Act we have never been in a doubtful position. We believed it would accomplish much good in the temperance line if enforced and we see no reason as ygt to doubt it. At the same time we have not the leisure or the inclination to make ourselves public prosecutors. We have never ask- ed any consideration fI’Ollf‘tllOSO engaged in the whiskey business in this town nor have we ever received it. we are therefore under no obligations in any sense to them, for all that. wehavo never pressed our ideas in an oileusive manner as we certainly might have (lflllv. We have on the other side been rewarded by p' “The Beaverton Express," BEAVERTON, ONTARIO. I :“Tho Woodvllle Advocate," \VOODVILLE.
