With the arrival of spring the hopes of dour business men are again much re~ vived, and as we announced lust week cansldernble increase in stocks are being made. The winter has been an un- usually severe one, and following the time-honored precedent of good crops after aaeve're winter we hope for :1 good harvest. The development of the coming seasons will be watched with the keenest interest by every hnsmeee man in this district. \Vith another favourable season the husiness revival I0 anxiously looked for will prohuhly commence. During the past few years our farmers have suffered ‘from the evil effects produced by moldess exs penditme induced by eensous of prosper- ity and euooeedal had crops, until at‘ In drawing attention to the necessity of an independent, or short telegraph line toIthe T. N. R. station, we express a want long felt by the merchants and people of Woodville, and 'we do not know of anything which would be of more practical utility or a greater con-- venienoe to the village. An immense amount of time is lost and during winter disagreeablejonrneys undertaken to the station by people of the village, who, were there telegraph communica- tion in existence, would gladly avail themselves of its advantages. Some ‘ entertaining merchants of Cannington- some years ago subscribed suflicient capital to build a short line to the station in that village and since then the convenience has become indispenn sible, The distance from \Voodville village to the station is fully as great as in Cannington and it is somewhat sur~ prising this mutterhas not been dis- cussed before. The entire cost 0! con~ struction, providing permission is ob" tained to use the poles of the lines running through the villageâ€"which we believe will be freely accordedâ€"will be considerably less than $50, certainly not a large sum for so convenient an institution. We believe a stock company is to be organized immediately and we hope to see the enterprise in full blast on the opening of spring. A lugs quantity of Flax Seed at Gum! Bro... chap. A TERRIBLE state of «thin: exists in theconquered Republic of Peru. Latest- advices represent that a state of anarchy exists and that there is no police and no government. Martial law has been declared. Robberies are numerous and a. felling of neneral alarm pievuils. Business is all stopped, und 20,000 Chiliaus are in Lima. All furm's in the neighbourhood of the city have been plundered. Pierolu, who is in Tel-mu. three days’ distance by rail from Lima, has been begged by the people to treat for peace. He refuses, unless the Chiliens allow muttere to revert to the position in which they wele before the war. The Chiliuns refuse to listen to such terms, and give thirty days in which to treat. In case of failure they will tuke their owuwuy of settling the difficulty and \ collecting indemnity. Citizens are afraid to treat on account of a well- grounded fear of an uprising of Com" muuislsnud general murder after the departure of the Chiliuus, the people are fleeing from all the towns, especially Lime. The Chilians promise not to destroy Limn. The Chilian minister of l " UNBASY rests the head that wears a crown." Never has the wis- dom of the illustrious bard been more graphically illustrated than in the late assassination of the Czar of Russia. During the past year he/ has never slept without a strong guard, never a well: even in the most secluded parts of his palace without armed attendants. His life has been one of constant terror and apprehension. Bwathless escapes from assassination have been chronicled from time to time and it is most sur- prising that he did not meet his death before. It is to be, presumed that the Nihilists will now turn their attention to the new Emperor and should they pursue him with but half the energy which characterized their hunt for the late Czar,‘ his reign is destined to be a short one. “That will be the outcome of this state of afl‘aiis it is hard to see, but the fact that with all the precautions taken to snuff out the revolutionary ugitation it has accomplished one of its pronounced ends, must fill the country with a terrible anxiety and un- A certainity as to the future. | THERE must be some pretty strong men in the neighborhood of Bolsovcr. The correspondent of the Warder in- forms us that “ Mr. Wm. Young‘re~ contly hauled 25 logs, 14 feet in length and from six inches .to two feet in diameter." Verily this is great work. The renowned Sampson will have to look closely to his laurels or our Bok sever friend will perhaps eclipse him. 'lut may of them hive “seeds so in- extricsbly involved that soother failure is regdrded with the most intense apprehension. Lost your the crops which gave every appearance while standing, of a most bountiful harvest, did not return by a large lmcentsge ‘, the expectations. Although largely in ; excess of the previous year, it did but little to remove the incubus of debt from which the people have been sufl'er- ing, and although another good harvest will do much towards clearing the financial atmosphere, we do not join the enthusiasts in pmdictiug a very brisk business season during the coming spring and summer. However: it is with satisfaction we notice even a hope in the future. With the Midland Rail- way running into the village, and a good grain market established, we may again hope for thut prosperity and euer’ which has characterized \Vood» ville in the past. or Dress Shirts.
