Some time ago we announced the ap. pointment of a. purchasing agent for Canada to buy horses for the British Army. Ile has new arrived and from the “Montreal Star" we learn his name is Colonel James Goldie and he is a. dis- tinguished cavalry oiliccr who has seen thirty years of service in India, and has taken part in all the great battles of the Indian mutiny. including,‘ the capture of Delhi, the relief of Lucknow, the battle of Gawnporeand the capture of Lucknow~ He is accompanied by a. veterinary enr- geon, and will innnedietely make a. tour of Canada and purchase three hundred horses for cavalry and artillery purposes. He will also.1nnl<e arrangements for securing an initial supply of horseu from Canada: for the British Army. In case of war breekfi out in the coming sum- mer there would be ndemand for one thousand hor'fi*irom Canada for the army. The With“ correspondent was informed that the kinds of animals re- quired are buy, brown. black or chestnut with a. Iew greys, riding horses for light, medium and heavy cavalry, horses bet- ween four and seven years old, from 15 hands 2 inches to 16 hands high, not less than eight inches below the knee, or less than seventy-two inches girth, and between 1000 and 1150 pounds, geldings preferred. For artillery or engineer rid. ing or draught purposes, the animals must be between 1100 and 1250 pounds for ~iding. and between 1200 and MUD pounds for draught. For the latter, long. low, active animals are preferred. Provided they are the right shape, make and action, with sufiicicnt breed, they may be in the rough state and straight fro-n the plow or the farm yard. The average price of suitable horses in Eng- land is about $200. The War Olliee have a. maximum price and that price is for horses delivered in England. so that prices paid in Canada. will be for the animals, less the cost of transport to England. The market \‘(lil be per- manent, and almost unlimited. Com- menting on this new era. for Canada. a. Londcn paper says : “It rests with Canadian breeders themselves to say whether he export horse trade of Canada shall assume an importance equalling, it may be exceeding. that of the Canadian cattle trade with the mother country. If they only show themselves ready to meet the necessities of the case the European demand is in time almost certain to outstrip the supply. We any European demand ad- visedly, for not only is the mother couri- try in urgent need of army reinounts but Germany, France, Russia. and other European powers are rapidly falling into a. like position, as their recent prohibi- tion of the export of horses clearly shows. The opportunities of the trade are indeed larger than may be generally imagined, Canadian Horses for the Bmtish Army. The ai’ontlrillc @dmcutc.
