When ordinary children would have played games the little Lemires played at dancing When there was no school, the professor taught Thin children All day long the sound of the .kit was heard from the clues-room, and the ybeating of the childish feet upon the floor, as one after the other practiced, and was '_ instructed. ‘- i ' dancing as the highest of all the arts, as has , ‘ Men said ; and yet there was one thing ' ‘wantinu. Much as he loved the art, he ? 'loved the ocean more, that is, he burned to 'love it more, because he had never seen it ,- hnd it went to his parents’ hearts to see the hy of so much promise rejoice in putting off the tight professional pants, and rush to ’ the docks among the ships and sailors, clad in a. suit of blue fiannels, trying to look like the oldest of salts. Continued from First Page. 'The children were all named in accordance with ancient Huguenot contour-either after old leaders of the cause, or alter the Bible. The boys were Rupert, Gaspard, Moise, Elie, and so on ,the girls were Antoinette, 'Charlotte, Rebekah, and Marie. They 'were carefully instructed in the religion and language of their ancestors, so that they were bilingual, and talked French as well as English. They Were also trained to con- sider that the queen and empress of all arts was the art of dancing ; and to dance well was a gift given to few, but to be aimed at by all ; and that there lather was the great- ‘est living mystery. The eldest of them, Rupert, promised to surpass his sire. Be. .‘l’ore he could walk he could dance. Before 3110 could talk he showed capabilities with :liis legs which brought tears of ijoy to his :father’s eyes. Long before he knew that speech may be represented, for purpose of moreuasiou, history, deceit, or love-making by certain symbols called the alphabet, :Rupert Lemire could reach a foot and a half above his height with either too, right ‘or left ; could liit either legâ€"not one leg <0nly, mind you-' over the head of every boy his own height ; and could treat every limb in his body as if it were an independent organ free to act exactly as it pleased, and unfet- tered by any of the ordinary laws of anatomy He was taller by four or five inches than the father. He was eightcccn years of age. ’There was nothing in the whole mystery of dancing which his father had to teach him ; , 'there was no harlequin at Christmas panto- mines at whom he did not secretly scoff in ”considering his own powers. He regarded D F gdaughter of the professor, the right hand got madame. Her name was Ruth “'uruc- Elord. Eight years before this date, when Sfills! was a child often years old, she was Qwought to the house by a servant, who said that he come from the house of ltatterick iBlldwinJhat this was the child about whom the correspondence hed taken place, and that the box contained all her-things. So She Was left , [\t that time In dreadful thing had happened to the child, hut she was too young yet quite to realize how dreadful n ihlngit Was. She haul lost her only brother. If it may be spoken of Mademoiselle Lemire with all respc 2t, she was for elastic- ity and mastery over her joints almost the ~ equal of Rupert. She was seventeen, and her function was to go to the lsdies' school , with her father, and help in teaching the - girls. She was a great favorite, because, ; when she could get u clear stage, and no eyes but the girls’ to watch her. she would execute all sorts of impossible things in dancing by herself. A clever girl, she had received from nature a mobile and sympa- thetic faceâ€"a. face which exactly reproduced that of the first Lemire, hanging on the wall, the banished Huguenot; this old fellow, with ‘the face which tried to be grim and was brimming over with fun. In fact, Antoinette ‘ who was, like Rupert, a dancer horn, re- , sembled Michel Lemire, formerly merchant, of Salutes, as much as a daughter can re- umble her father. EXAMISA'I‘IUN .-’l‘lm first quarterly examinstion of the Louisville School for this year was held on Friday April 4th. The attendance of parents and parties inter- ested was larger than usual. Mr. Renzin, the Inspector examined the Arithmetic ‘ classes, by giving them a number of theore- tical and practical exauwles. which Were Very satisfactorily solved. The rest of the classes were examined by the teacher, Mr. Symons, assisted by some of the visitors. All the questions asked were answered liy the pupils with alacrity and precision. Some neat specimens of writing were shown by some of the younger scholars which were quite surprising. Several propositions of Euclid were very creditably solved by the fifth class.
