Per Brttio. Boaveiton Ashland is situated on the shores of of Lake Superior about 75 miles from Duluth. Most probably there is not one of my Beaverton frien ‘s has ever heard of the place before, but it is not more than two months ago since there was a boom here that for wildness of specula- tion almost equalled the famous \Vllllll- peg Boom. Until a week ago 1 had never heard tell of the place myself. but at present it is the spot in which Pro- vidence has cast my lot for a short time coming almost direct here from Canada. The manner of living is extremely hard to fall in with. and every thing is so dif- ferent to what we have been used to. This town presents acurious appearance to a stranger with all the features pre. sent, in a very large degree, which are so prominent in booming Western towns viewâ€"Salome, Hotels and Real Estate Ofncos. ' ‘he town consists of one long street xtending over two miles along the Lane shore, and I don't suppose there is a farm within 20 milrs The forest enroaches right up to the Main street. It is hard for a stranger to find out where on earth the “boom" came from. But Americans have a peculiar 'knack of raising ”booms" where other people would see nothing but barren- ness. The very atmosphere of this country is permeated with the “boom” fever, and a city or town that has not got one is “away back." Ashland has had hers. Duluth has one, St. Paul’s has A Beaverton Boy Abroad. one. Fargo, Bismarck, Jamestown. Minneapolis, Omaha, Sioux City and St. Joseph “gall booming away in great style. T e newspapers published in those respective towns indulge in genuine American Bombast and Spread Eaglei Nuarding the “wonderful pro- gress" s were making. and “This 0 ty is deal tied in a few years to be one of the greatest in the Union, etc. etc.." suffices to say (1‘ all the 1; mm and cities I’ve been in since (0 nine here. There i: not one that is making such substan- tial progress as our own Toronto, when an American newspaper estimates the population of “this greatand progressnve city" at 150:000 inhabitants then you will be perfectly safe to put it down at 100,000. The tendency to exaggerate seems born in the average American citizen, if a person was to aWallow all they hear and read _abont this country, they would eat all they w uld see. Happening to take up the t. Paul "Globe," the first article to' catch my eye was entitled, “An English game of doing injury to tle Commerce .of the United States." T ‘0 article contains a few facts and an unfiommon amount of “Rot." It recount» hh interview with a Major Peabody, a great American rail- way authority. and among a great many other things he says that. “Emissaries of England had a hand in the devising of the interstate commerce bill as it could not be framed better for ruining the commerce of this country, and places us in the eonimermal pOWer of Canada." Regarding the C. P. 11.. he said, “Retal- iation is in Canada’s eye. and her (Jana- diau Pacific will carry cereals and all other merchandise for nearly nothing, and lose money all the time for the sake of weakening the roads of this country." Of course this is not of the worst type, still it is conceded all over this country that the C. P. R. is reaping immense benefit from the inter-state bill. in another place he says. “we are at the mercy of England in acammercial sense just as well as in a naval sense,” then there is a whole column $101 up in the an no style. Thzre is a great deal of interest taken ove ' here in the move- ments of editor, O‘Brien. full double- headed oolunnz appearing every day with new mt oi his movements. and ed".- to ink: written in-red hot condemnation of the “heartless tyrant, Lord Lans- downe." Americans as well as Cana- dians haye to keep the weather eye o_ieufo:tho I iih vote. Charles Dickens‘ estimate of "the great Amerian pee'ile” with their bombast about “our Insti- tootions” etc. etc.. is not in my opinion the least overdrawn. Nearly every per- son has read his description in “Martin lhuzzlewit" of the American‘s dining. Their customers have not changed since lus time. As soon as the dinner bell rings there is a mad stampede made in the direction of the dining: hall. The oulooker is almost forced to the conclu- siou that they have like Dr. Tanner. been fasting on pump water for a week or so. Mechanics get Very good wages up here. liriclilayers in fit.
