High Constable Calverlcy has a great knack of always getting his man when he takes to the road with a blue paper. His last capture was Joseph Elliott. of Beaver-ton. who had eluded arrest for a month or two. until a couple of weeks ago when he was taken bv constable Jewett of Port Perry. but with the aid of some others escaped again. Constable Calverley went to Beaver-ton on Friday last. and spent the day without success trying to find Elliott. so he started for home on the five o’clock train. He returned to Beaverton bv the next train from Lorneville and slipped quietly into the village. To his great amusement he found Elliott, with a crowd around him. explaimng how he had monkcycd all da y with Calverley, and kept out of his way so cleverly. Calverley listened a while with great interest, and when he finally collared his man Elliott was so surprised he jumped about three feet high. He gave in at once. During the day many of_Elliott‘s friends had tried at various times to impress Calverley with the belief that Elliott was such a. hard case he would take the constable‘s life the moment he attempted to arrest him, but it did'nt seem to come oil. It is a singular and most astonishing thing that such a reign of terror has been in- stituted by the whiskey sellers of Ben- verton that not a citizen of the village dare even point Elliott out to the high constable. They need a few visits from our eflicicnt high constable in such a. hole as it must be. where people talk of taking constable‘s livesâ€"Whitby Chron- icle.| As Others See Us.
