I hog to tender hearty thanks to the gentlemen who interested themselves so generously at. my premises on Wednes- dav night during the ï¬re at tho Foun- dry, and to whose tlmolyefl‘orts is in a. large measure duo the prevention of ï¬re at my premises. The undersigned wishes to expreqs to the citizens, who so generously and at the er~fpense of so much lahor assisted in preventing the destruction of his resi- dence hv ï¬re during the burning;r of the Beaverton Foundry. his sincere thanks; for their manly. and timely scrvieer. “Friends in need are friends indeed†and without the timely assistance ren- dered by those present at the ï¬re his home would no doubt soon have been reduced to ashes. J. J. GLOVER. Beaverton, July 26th, 1888. F ifty-two out of the one hundred and seven candidates passed the entrance examinations at Whitby with 14 recom- mended, and 32 out of 62 at Port 1’ My. For a long time Beaverton has escaped the ravages of the fire ï¬endjbut on Wed- nesday night we received a visitation which has robbed the village of one of ‘I the most valuable of its industries. . Shortly after eight o'clock the alarm of fire was given and on turning out it was foundlthat the foundry was on fire in the neighborhood of the engine room. The ’ flames, fanned by a light breeze, spread with great rapidity and almost before it ‘ could he reached the entire building was enveloped. Willing hands rapidly set to work to save everything possible but as i it was seen to be useless to make effort in behalf of tho foundry. attention was concentrated on the adjoining buildings and only by the most energetic and uu- l tiring labor they were saved. even as it was, the residence of Mr. J. J. Glover, has received a bad scorching. The ï¬ne I shOp is a heap of smoking ruins and we regret to say no insurance covers the loss We understand, the proprietor Mr. Smith, when last heard from was in Ireland and expected to be home in August but where he may be now it is I hard to say. as he intended visiting France. Mr. Colin Campbell also loses ‘ heavily in point of work ready for ship- ment and also the inconvenience of supply for contracts now in hand. A large quantity of new work belonging to the foundry was secured from damage . and the books were also saved, other- wise the contents were entirely destroy. ed. The loss of the foundry until it is rebuilt will be a serious blow to the vil- lage. not only to those directly depend- ent on its work for their support but to every farmer inthe country for miles around as well as the business men of the place. Mr. Smith has our sincere sympathy in his trials, which, by the way, appear to be an cxempliï¬cation of the time-worn experience that “misfor- tunes never come singly," as it is only a few months since he lost his cstimah.‘e Wife. The origin of the tire is a mystery as only a few minutes previous to the alarm, Mr. Alex. Ross, the foreman, was through the premises and no signs of smoke or fire were Visible. The loss is roughly placed at $15,000 and without one cent of insurance. Aâ€"a-.. CARD OF THANKS. CARD OF THANKS â€cannon Foundry Completely Destroyed By Fire. FIRE !
