The annual union Plonghing Match, under the auspices of the Agricultural Societies of North and South Victoria, ‘ tool: place on Tuesday last let inst., on the farm of Mr. Hugh McUoquOo dale, Lot 3, 3rd Com, Eldon. The weather was all that could be desired, and the attendance was consequently large. The prizes offered this year were very good. and the thanks of the man. ugement are due to those who contri- , buted so liberally towards them, especial- ly the Eldon Township Council, who very generously granted the sum of $20. The energetic Secretar , Mr. James heith, of Lindsay, did all in his power to make the day pass off well, and his efforts were ably seconded by the genial President, Mr. M. H. Berkley, of Cum- bray, Mr. James Stuart, of \Voodville, and other members of the Society. The field selected for the contest was not the best in the world, but the few stones and slight unevenness of the ground, ‘ only served to bring out the abilities of the ploughmen the better. The prize for the best team in the field wasjnstly awarded to Mr. EdWard Thorndike, whose heavy dmughts Were the admired of all admirers. Altogether the match was a grand success, and passed off very quietly and pleasantly. Below is the list of prize winners-:â€"- PLOUGHING MATCH of some wholesome change, ehd we believe would welcome anything which would improve the Fall Show 0 If Woodville, Cannington, and Oak- wood, and perhaps,Beave' , could be induced to unite their lunds and amal~ gnniate their Fall ShOWs, the amount of the whole would produce a. first-class exhibition, one which we are sure would prove a success everyway. A large amount of expense would be avoided, the prizes would be larger, the class of exhibits better, and altogether a much ‘ more satisfactory exhibition could be urranged than those we at present on» joy. The show could be held alternate] y r at the various places within the union, so that any pecuniary benefit derived from the shows by the various places would not be interfered with. We would call the attention of the Dirac- lore and members of the various Socie- ties to this matter and see what could be done to bring about a union or something which would improve the lamest condition of affairs. We do not think much difficulty would be expmx ieuced in bringing about the change as the farmers, and those particularly in- terested all seem to feel the necessity A! A‘, 7 I I applied to one prize list would give very fair prizes, something which it would be worth the farmer's trouble to com~ pate fdr, but when it. is cut up into so many small parts the. prizes become so insignificant. that the end for which the {show was intended is defeated. in which both form" end the pew; m fast losing interest. Beside: being a. great expense to the country the ob- iect for which these exhibition: were designed in often defeated. A few in- telligent men who undemtaud the inv toutione of the institution trouble them- selves to exhibit their stock and prm ’ duce and strive to learn something from the exhibits dr‘oehm, but the majority of those who attend the Fall Show: do‘ so from an entirely different motive-â€" to them Show Duy has become a species of holiday, to be enjoyec‘ as any other holiday, without a thought an to the real object of the Show. We do not doubt but he is of the sauna lineage, but We sleo believe he is one of the outer bmuch~ esmfer from the atom. It is honourable in Mr. Campbell to try to keep up the connec- tion. 0! course the Csmpbolls have it right to feel big when they consider for a moment that one of their clan holds the helm of state in this great Dominion, and is son-imlaw to the Queen.
