Three hotel 'busses were in waiting at the station on arriving at Gravenhurst. I was agreeably surprised next morning at the appearance of the village. which is pleasantly situated on ~liigh “MANY . ing ground. and mostly betwm two n on, Muskokn to the west and Gull Lake to the east. The population of the village, I was informed. is between Him and 2000 ; it is a hive of industiy. there being: in the village fourteen saw and shingle mills. There are quite a number ofgdry goods, grocery, hard- ware stores, wagon shops, blacksmith shops, ï¬ve well appointed hotels, and last but not least, four churches, belonging to the following denominations: Church of England, Presbyterian, Methodist and Raman Catholic. I was present at the Eng- lish church on last Thursday evening when two infants Were christened, and listened to an able and impressive thanksgiving sero men by the resident pastor, Rev. Mr. Lloyd. This church had been but recently dedicated. and isa tasty and comfortable edifice. Large quantities of lumber and shingles are carried from this p-int over th: Northern Railway. The busimss men of the place seem to be doing‘well, and seem to be Well satisï¬ed. The lake scenery here is very pretty. The lakes in most part are walled in with immense and high granite rocks, and the numerous islands in them are huge rocks. The mill owners of the place and neighborhood are. preparing to bring down increased quantities of logs for next season‘s cut. Saw a few fairish farms, but that neighborhood is better adapted for grazing than wheat growing: The land grows very good coarse gralï¬â€˜s'l' hay and roots The waiter “as shown specimens of ore Ly Mr. Jacob Davidson, who is doing a pushing business with his saw mill, four miles from Gravenhnrst. It is altogether likely that rich finds of ores will he made in that reeion of country, for if there is not, I am not'eo sure of the future of the neigh- borhood after the timber supply will be ex~ hansted. But the people there expect the timber to last. for a number 0‘ years to come. At Thompson Co’s mikls at Longford, there is ready for shipmen over the North- em Railway several million feet of lumber.
