Toronto. Ont The teachers of \Vesb Victoria assembled in cnnvenliuu at, \Vumlvdlc, on the 2nd and 3rd November. ’l‘he conu-ntion was opened by prayer by the President. Mr. ll. lien/in, l.l’.S. After a.shurt opening address from the President. Mr. L. Gilchrist. head master of Woudville Public School, read a paper on Cnglish- lniinitivus. This paper was very interesting and carefully prepared, illustrating a uni- form system of parsing inlinitive verbs, chewing that much time can be saved by simplicity and the avoidance of multiplicity of delinitions and terms found in the numeious grammars. A very interesting discussion followed in which the president dwelt on the great number of grammars in- existence. Mr. Rogers followed, going over the ground he deemed wise to teach a fourth class and practically upholding Mason’s (wrammar. Mr. Gilchrist then gave his experience on this subject. Then- )lr. Campbell, of Hartleyr took up the sub. j:ct of M .ip Geography and showed his way of comparing mountain ranges and shores,. dealing with Hindustan. and America. A , discussion followed, a number of teachers T making many valuabhr suggestions about methods of teaching this subject. The president spew briefly at definitions, re. commending not more than three or four a week. as too many deï¬nitions were tending to confuse a child. During the afternoon a warm disenssion arose regarding text books. Anumber of teachers maintained that 'as far as they had seen the proposed series of text books itinemfluwd, would be no im- provemen 0.] those now in use. A. 0. lraham then read a paper on English Liters- ture. This subject was discussed by L. Gilchrist, H. lteazin and others. Mr. Piitchard then read a well prepared paper on "“"hat is Teaching 1" This paper was an ' able effort to show how far teachers taught. The discussion arising from this paper re. sulted in many valuable suggestions from a number of those present. ‘ Fanny’s Wonk. -â€"Mr.' J D. Rexd of Balsover, took We subject of Geography, after which a very interesting discussiou followed. He was succeeded by Mr. An- derson with a very interesting paper on “Modern ‘ Deviations.†Miss Rogers took up the subject of "Tablet Classes." showing in an instructive manner her method of teaching the smaller pupils. During the discussion which followed it would appear that in the opinion of those discnsaing the question, more skill was requisite to teach the junior classes than those advanced in our schools. Mr. Breth- our addressed the teachers. dealing with the danger of inexperienced teachers on begin. ners at school, urging that more tact we needed with beginners than With those pupils who became avdanced. He dwelt chiefly on the foundation of an education- Mr. Brethour carefully illustrated by show- ing that horticulturists would be more par- ticular in having a good experienced man while the plants \vere tender. During his address .\lr. Brethour spoke disapprovingly of teachers who made teaching a stepping stone, and strougly disapproved of teachers preparing tor other aroeations while on- gaged by trustees. In conclusion he urged the necessity of short home lessons as a means of better preparation, and a source by which children would gain conï¬dence in themselves, and strongly advised teachers to prepare the lessons thoroughly before appearing before any of their classes. Mr. leazin followed. advising short home work. and constant review as the host way to success. The speaker adverted to the in- stability of the teaching profession, pointing out that inside of eleven years only three of the teachers then in West Victoria were now engaged in the County. He thought it would be better to combine the ofliee of Township Councillor and Trustee. The question draWer was then Opened. After many instructive ausu'ers Were given the com/cation which was well attended, erinu. ing the interest and spirit of the teachers in the work in which they are engaged, wan closed with prayer.
