'Tho Lite and‘l’lmos ofJosoph Gould- H; W. K Higgins. Toronto. C. Bucket! Robin. «on. 300 pages. Cloth $1.50. Halt Moxoooo.9.5o. 'l‘he biography of a statesman is a vhaptcr in a nation‘s history; and the story of a long and useful life is. of necessity. soon-thing more than a mere narrative of personal endeavour and achievement. Joseph Gould was born in a log oa‘niu iu the Township of U):- luridge on the 29th of December. 1808. lle died in the Town of Uxhridge on tho 29th of June, 18%. He lived exactly seventy-eight years and six months. During the time of this long period he lived continually in his native township. At the time of his birth there were only about a dozen settlers in Uxhridgc. scattered miles apart ; to the north was an unbroken and unsurveyed forest with- out a single white settler, and in the south, in the front townships of Whitby l and Pickering, there were only a few straggling settlements along the lake shore. Such was eighty years ago. what is now the prosperous County of Ontario- 'l‘ho Province was still in its infancy‘ The seat of Government was a dirty little village where now is the great City of Toronto. Slaves were still bought and sold but their further introduction into the Province was not permitted. There were not so many papers in all of Canada. from the Detroit River to the Atlantic Ocean. as there are in the County of Ontario today. What enor- mous changes have taken place in the material. sceial.eommcrc1al and political condition of the country since then. Mr. Gould witnessed all these changes and , took no small part in assisting to bring .‘ them about. It was his intention to. write a short history of his own life and tinies‘dmving reference to Canada‘sp1‘o~ gross in gen “1114.1. and of the town and tomxshiu of Ushridue in particular“; but old age and illness prevented the carry - a ing out of this design. The 11 01k which 1he veteran contemplated and had actu- ally commenced, Mr. Higgins has most ‘ satisfactorily completed. He has pro- duced not only a faithful biography of a worthy man. who, from his youth up. ward, through an unusual long life, took an active. intelligent and unceasing interest in public affairs. but also a full and authentic history of the county in l which he was born and in which he lived l and laboured. For this task Mr. Hiwins i ‘hh was very specially qualiï¬ed. His thirty ' \‘ears residence at Whitby and his con- nection with the “Chronicle" during that time. 1:1:ulchi1n thoroughly acquaint- ed with the county and brought him into intimate personal relations with its leading men. 'lhe account of the settl emcntof 'l‘hoiah and adjoining township is particularly tell and interesting, and it is only by the pcruml of books such as the one we are now so 110111119 that our younger people can become tainiliar with all their lather-s braved and sullercd to make the country what it now is. The volume has a. beautiful steel portrait of Mr. Gould, and 111 print. paper and binding is everything that can be desired. We may add that the Publisher would be glad to correspond with some active person willing to canvass for the work. Address. 5 Jordan St., Toronto. 1 l Mr. P. Gauthier (representing Z.
