Ehlayor Smyth addressed his colleagues and in doing so returned thanks for his election and declared the people fortunate in procuring such an aggregation of brains to surround the board. Ilis worship de- clared that the construction of sewers, walks and roads would receive a large share cf the revenue and that the fire system would be improved. He was con- fident that the council would aim to lower the taxes and wisely spend the avaziing funds. 'rur: ('HAIRMEN Chairmen cf the difl'erent committees were then chosen as follows: Finance, Ald. Touchburn, Board of Works, Ald. Jackson, Police, Ald Gillogly. The appointment‘for town property committee was left till evening. 7 Ald. Touchburn advocated calling for tenders for material forthe board of works at once. Green cedar should be purchased from the farmers direct. It would last longer than the dry sort usually got. His Story of the Tragic Death of Iinte Field’s Spanish Lover. Editor Kohlsnut related a funny story of the delight “Gone” Field took in teasing Kate Field. and how vexed she would be at the pranks he was continu- ally playing upon her. "But the story that broke Kate Field's heart was written by ’Gene when she was in Spain writing up the Spanish in 1895. It was one of the most ingenious and sensational fakes ever sprung on the public,” said Mr. Iiohlsnnt. “The thing purported to be a special from a correspondent at Madrid. Having first, in delicate fashion, announced that the Duke of Mutano had ofi'crcd his hand to Miss Field and had been accepted. ’Gcnc proceeded with the thrilling opi- sodc he had dreamed out. “ ‘Miss Field had one day arrayed her- self brilliantly in a lovely silk costume in which red and yellow, Spain’s colors, largely predominated. She was to attend the bullfight with her lover. The arrival of Mutano and his ducul equipage, splen- did attire and ceremonious attentions to his fiancee were elaborately set forth. Miss Field in her gorgeous robes accom- panied the duke to the Plaza dcl Toros. “ ‘Arrivcd at the plaza, the duke found the assemblage so large that he would not dcign to mingle with the crowd that poured in at the main entrance, but brib- cd those in charge of the arena to let him pass through with his bride to be. “'It was an innovation that took the people by storm. "lu- haughty courlicr escorting the lovvly girl. the mingled glit- ter and git-urn of his gilded trappings and her silken draperies enrupturcd the great multitude that sat tier on tier about the vast amphitheater. “ ‘In this imposing manner the duke. his inumorntu and hisrctinue traversed the entire diameter of the uri-nu. The first bull bud not yet been brought in, and Miss Field urnl the duke were for the time bcing the whole attraction. “ ‘Just as the duke mudc ready to us- sist his Indy over the barricade :1 wild my ring out from the throng. a shout of tor- l'Ul‘, not of applause. Through some mis- take a bull had been admitted to the arena too Soon :iud. glimpsing Miss Field's dross, rushed for her in headlong rugc. ” ‘Miss Field shrivkcd and tainted with terror. but the strong arms of tho duke thrust her quickly over the barrier. where a hundred li.inds stretched upward to re- ccivc her limp figure. but her lover had no time to save himself. and the lIl‘XI in- stant the horns of the infuriated bull were buried in his vitnls.’ “Well,” said Mr. liohlsant. “this story was copied everywhere, and the sympa- thy of the world went out to the lovely American who had lost her lover in this tragic manner. “ ‘Only the other day.’ said Miss Field to me a short time before her death. ‘a young lady came to me and said. “Oh. Miss Fit-Id, I have often longed to meet you and tell you how deeply I sympathize with you in the loss of your lover over in Spain. that splendid fellow who”â€" And she was much frozen with astonishment when I cut her off (Hill said. “Rum!" ’ ”â€" Denver Post.
