’A press letter from the Depart: ment of Agriculture says: Some interesting facts regarding the fruit industry in the Pacific Province were brought, out at a recent meeting of the British Columbia Fruit GrOWers: Association. There has been a general re- vival throughout the province, pro- duction has materially increased and the outlook is described as very pro- mising. A careful estimate gives the total output of metalliferous mines at 1,276,000 tons and of coal mines as 1,686,149 tons, the total value being $19,200,000. Gold, both plac- er and lode. is responsible for $6,- 900,000 of this total; coal and coke, $5,250,000 and copper $4,- 500,000. ‘ __- ‘n-uh‘.’ 3n- Notwithstanding some temporary drawbacks, the total cut of lumber for 1903 exceeded that of 1902 bv from 10 to 20 per cent... the esti- mate of the complete cut being 325.- 000,000 feet. The lumbermen are making strong efforts to obtain a revision of the tarifl whereby some measure of protection in the North- west, market will be afforded. Though «here has been an increas- ing consumption of spirits by the people 9! Canada during the last five years, the total consumption in 1903 was barely a. third of what it was in 1874. It is interesting to look back over the annual returns of the De- partment of Inland Revenue and ob- serve the comparative consumption per head of spirits. beer, and wines. year by year. 'l'he record begins with 1869, and is as follows: Spirits. Beer. Wine. gals. gala. gals. 1869.....................1.124 2.290 0.115 1874 ..................... 1.994 3.012 0.288 1879 ..................... 1.131 2.209 0.104 1884 ..................... 0.998 2.924 0.117 1889 ..................... 0.77 3.263 0.097 1894 ..................... 0.742 8.722 0.089 1899 ..................... 0.661 3.995 0.080 _-A,. The total fruit crop marketed is estimated to have ex- cccded $5 00,000. v vâ€"- ,u - As a set-ofi to these increases the salmon pack of 1903 was the small- est since 1892, the principal cause being- the wanton destruction of sal- mon at the traps in previous years and the absence on the American side of any regulations for preserva- tion of the fish supply; 473,674 cases were marketed, The halibut fisherv is growing rapidly and reached to nearly 11,000,000 pounds. ,I .................... While this record shows a. decrease in the consumption per head of spirits, it shows an increase in the consumption of beer; the latter show- ing being largely due, no doubt, to the introduction of lager and other beers of light alcoholic strength. In connection with the above figures, it is to be noted that in Great Britain the consumption of spirits is 1.02 gallons per head per annum, and of beer 31.3 gallons per head; in Ger- many it is 1.89 gallons of spirits and 26 gallons of beer; in France, 1.91: gallons of spirits and ~ 5.3 of beer, besides 24.25 gallons of wine. The United States is credited with n consumptiOn of spirits amounting to 0.86 of a gallon per head, and of beer amounting to 12.6 gallons per head. on the whole, these figures af- ford just ground for the conclusion ‘ that Canadians are a sober people. i â€"Manitoba Free Press. ”Home Paovmce.
