Mr. Hugh Mc- Millan has not only repaired the storm-tossed part of his barn roof but in defiance to any further storms has reshingled the remaining The school, owing to the generosâ€" ity and thought of one 01 our lead- ing business men, ceased only for the Monday following the storm, an old- time school was held in that parti- cular division of the Staples’ block, which formerly has been used as a town hall. \ How unfortunate for our children and they lived at a dis- tance from a commercial centre. The trustees and a number of the rate- payers removed the debris and re- paired the school, leaving it ready for work Thursday of last week. We regret to hear of Miss Forest's illness and departure. We hope for her speedy recovery and return. Mr. W. H. Stevens, P.S.I.., met the ratepayers of the section in the school on Monday evening the 18th inst., and discussed with them the adverse questions of repairing the old school building or erecting a new one. Mr. Stevens showed very clearly the unmistakable advantage of a new school to the children by increasing their comfort, preserving their health and economizing the teacher’s time and to the section financially by saving fuel and draw- ing a. larger government grant. Miss Ethel Reed is spending a few days with her grandmother, Mrs. Smale, of Lindsay. Mr! Reed has almost completed census-taking in the Hartley, ward. Messrs. John Staples and N. I. Reed are making preparation for a trip to Edmonton next week. We all join in wishing them a plwsant and prosperous journey. Entrance begins 26th. We wish the pupils the best of success. The Grass Hill Sunday school pic- nic comes next Saturday. This is enough since everyone comes as soon as they hear of it. In picnic grounds, too, we are more than fortunate, having but to walk out of town on a side street to reach the groxe. All day the heavy wagons of the roadmakers lumber by as they build the king’s highway to better carry material for the coming construction work. PLEADED GUILTY. The trial of Robert Grant and Frederick Hawes, of Eldon, for steal- ing eight head of cattle from Mr. McEachern, of that place, was held on Tuesday before Magistrate lMoore. Mr. G. A. Jordan appeared for the accused, who pleaded guilty to the charge and judgment was re- served until Friday the 23rd, at 10 o clock. It will be remembered that Robert Grant was captured in Toronto on Saturday and the other, Frederick Hawes, was captured in the same city and brought to town last night.
