W'OODI'ILLE The annual Dominion day celebration was held here on Saturday last, and attracted the largest gathering of specta- tors that has ever repaid the efforts of the energetic committee in charge. The trades procession was a happy idea and the enterprising business men of Wood- ville entered into the spirit of the occa- sion with a will and made a capital turn out. In the procession the following were represented: S. Dumont. mounted police; \Voodville brass band ; members of the village council and directors of the Eldon Agricultural Society ; Nicholl’s Golden Bow and agricultural imple- ments; Eyre and Staples, bicycles, binder twine and farm produce ; Nicholl’s and Trewethy. carriage works in full operation ; McKee’s butcher shop ; Moore Bros, general merchants; Mc- Phersorr‘e up-to-date hardware ; Barne’s patentiforce pumps with two large tanks of water and sprinkler at work; J. Stuart‘s harness emporium; P. W. Dodd’s general merchandise ; Murchison and Gilchr’st, dry goods and groceries ; Stoddart's furniture factory; W Bing- ham, lock wire fence. The procession created no small fund of amusement to the onlookers. At the fair grounds a capital program of horse-races and. athletic sports were run off. The free- for-all event had three starters, namely : McCrimmon’s Sir Oliver, Bowes Aber- deen, Clay and Hill’s Birdie 0. Sir Oliver captured the event in three straight heats. In the named race Tucker's Miss Richardson of Sunderland proved a winner in one. two. three~ order. J ohnson's Bob. L. second and.» McBaiu’s black gelding third. The running race, half-mile dash was a warm number and Master Thorndike. was an easy winner with O’Neill’s Chedoke in both heats. Tucker won second place with O'Neill’s lue Fish, and Moore Bros. Topsy Moore third. The Riverview foot ball team defeated Cannington by one goal. The concert in the evening was well patroniz- ed and proved a very pleasant afl'air. The day was ï¬ne and the foreman was spent in preparation by the ladies in decorating Mrs. Bryant’s lawn in the form of a dining hall, and by the boys in laying cute base ball diamond. At 3 p.m. the base ball match was called, the contending clubs being Eden and Grass Hill, but it was nearly5 p.m. before the game really started, owing to the persistent kicking of the Grass Hill catcher, through gresn‘ glasses and seeing several balls at once. The game was Eden's from the start and Grass Bill will have to do considerable playing yet before talking about getting their revenge from Eden. The score was 7 to 28 in Eden‘s favor. and an innings. He had had pes- scssiou for some time, but his neighbor, Mr. Oliver, through personal spite, wanted to deprive him of his rights. Mr. Oliver retal‘at-ed vigorously. saying he had recently bought the Parker lot, part of NO. 4 Block U; that the lane lead- ing meg-em was only eight feet wide; that .l. Parker was only a trespasser; he neither did roadwork nor paid taxes; that he (Oliver) had a right to said piece of road. was willing .tO pay fair rent forit, and would give up possession any time it was required as a public highway. Mr. Oliver's plea was forcible and convincing, but the council. decided not to lease the roadway at present. since Mr. Parker had it planted. and'a motion was passedin; structing the clerk to demand $1.50'from Mr. Parkenfor permission to retain said roadway until the time for saving the crop thereonshall have elapsed. ‘ MORE COMPLAINTS. Mr. P. Kirley stated that some persons doing road jobs or statute labor had under. mined his fence for gravel, although the township pit was only a fewi rods distant across the roadway. The council regretted the occurrence and in- structed Mr.‘Hickson to ascertain the loss sustained by Mr. Kiriey and the names of the trespassers. that they may settle the matter or be brought to justice. ’ Mr. J no.
