James um:- h Tho Globe 0: June lat sppem this adi- torial note:â€" -'_-â€", “It. has not been generally noticed the} the name 'Newark’ was not giv- en ofï¬cially to Niagara immediatew after it became the capital of Upper, Canada. ‘ It continued to be called ‘Niagara' during the ï¬rst two ses- sions of the ï¬rst Parliament, at shown by its records. and the name NeWark’ Was lubstltutcd during the last. three smions. Fortunately af- ter York became the capital the new- er name fell into disuse." The writer of this note is, I think, in error, and I beg to giv. my m- sons. W’flvlcre 'are In the Legislative Lib- rary typewritten copies of the jour- nals of the ï¬rst gnd soccncisessiong of the- ï¬rst Parliament. They are headed “Newark. 17th Soï¬ember, 1792" and “Newark. Slat May. 1793." The name “Niagara.†does not. appear. There are no records of the 3rd, 4th and 5th sessions knovm to be in existence. They may be found some day. end I have no doubt that they also will be found as of NeWark. The Writer of your note probably drew his conclusions from the volume entitled "The Pro- vincial Statutes, Revised. Corrected and Reprinted _by Authority. York. 1t 1818.†In this volume the names' are given as in your note; but, it should be remembered that it was a. compilation made at York a quarter of a century after the sessions, and is not an original record. The orig- inal record distinctly gives Newuk, and is, I presume. the authority in the matter. But eVen apart from that, the York, 1818. volume could not be accepted as authoritative on this point, seeing that it makes a. mistake in numbering the sessions running over a. period of eight years. in the volume there is no ï¬fth sesâ€" sion to the first Parliament, it being numbered by mistake the ï¬rst of the second. The mistake is continued until. strange to say, we ï¬nd the fourth session of the third Parlia- ment. in 1803, and again the fourth se sion of the third Parliament in 1814. In this year (1804) the compilâ€" ers rectiï¬ed the matter. but why they ‘ did not retrace their steps and cor- red; the previous errors is somewhat strange. The error, doubtless, arose through thinking that only four ses- sions must have been the limit. These mistakes in numbering the sessions were corrected in the stat- utes issued at Kingston in 1831 by Thompson and Naefarlane. but the old error of Niagara and Newark was perpetuatvd, and, stranger still, the 17:“) St'SSlOll held at York is z-rezlited in Nt‘W'dl'k.
