Sc Mr. Rich. Heels Wants Damages For Alleged Mistake oi Fireman Cotey A special meeting of the Police and Lighting committee was held. on Thursday night to consider a charge laid by Readmasters Wright and Hbels against Fireman Cotey for his action at the fire in the house of the latter railroader on Sunday 85’ ternoon. The complainants were present and Roadmaster Wright thus stated their oases‘: “‘I am a brother-in-Taw of Mr. Heels whose house was damaged by fire on Sundzw afternoon. Mr. Heels was absent from home during the fire. I found out from his wife that PIMPREVENTED CITIZEN PROM SAVING GOODS AT-FIRE they had no insurance on their fur- niture and at once went to get it out. I was stopped at the door by Fireman Cotey. I asked him his authority for- stopping me, and he told me to mind my own business, and upon my again seeking to get the furniture out, he repeated these words; After a while I found Chief Nevison' who ordered Cotey to let me remove the goods. In the mean- time the fire had made headway and the goods suffered damage that they would have escaped if I had been let remove them at first. On that ac- count I think Mr. Heels has a claim for damages against the town. THE FIREMAN'S STORY Fireman Covey. said : I did stop the goods from being taken out' of the front part of the house. It did not apqe'ar to me that the fire would reach there, and the goods were be- ing badly damaged by removal. Some lads were throwing sum from 1'_A the upstairs and breaking it. fused to let Mr. Wright take the goods out and believed that in do- ing so I was acting__in Mr. Heels' interests. I did not tell him to mind his' owri business. Unless I have in- structions to the contrary I shall feel justified in acting the same way again. again. THE BOOKS AND LADDERS It was decided that the hook and ladder trucks should go to every fire and whichever carter draws them there will get $1 by day and 82 by night. The mayor had seen the fire wagon driven over hose at Sunday’s fire and the firemen were given orâ€" gave each other a little of their same old wobble as to the merits and defects of the present system. Numbers from the neigh- boring villages of Oakwood, Can- nington and Sunderland were in atâ€" tendance, some of whom were heard to comment on the utter lack of disorder, which is sometimes so diffi- cult to avoid on similar occasions.
