When his appointment to the man- agement of the Rio Tinto Mines Was announced some four years ago it was hailed with delight by Canadians as something in the nature of a na- tional triumph. AN ENORMOUS OUTPUT The Output of the Rio Tinto is about two million tons or ore a year, half: of which is shipped to Europe and America and sold for copper and sulphur values. About ï¬ve per cent. of the ore is treated by smelting to blister copper in the latest type of American smelting plat. The balance is treated 10- cally by leaching with water a meth- od distinctive to a few mines in the south- of Spain, and in no other part of the world.
