W Would have been closeted with the power company of Mayor Sootheran, and his council, backed by [this paper, saved the town‘s mortgage at. all. These are two instances of what Mr. McLaughlin has done for the town. Let him go, and the town would soon be “done for’ all right. In two little deals there was $2,350 or the yearly proceeds of about $60,000 that he did his best to give. away; and in the ï¬rst case was successful. Now what is .the use of talking? Is that the sort of man any riding wants at Ottawa where corporations camp out on the trail of every memâ€" ber who has had any experience along their lines ? Judging Mr. McLaugh: lin by his record at home, he would simply be among the most. conSCience- Our town readers at least do not need to be reminded who the man was who camc- before council one night a. few weeks ago with the com- pany's roproslenwtivo, and argued that. the town ought. to cancel that. mortgage without charge! It. was Mr. R. J. Mclï¬ughlin who did it, acting as a promopcr’s attorney and in his pay. ' \ ‘hc other case is more recent. The tow'n owns a mortgage for $1,500 against the Burlcigh Falls power owned by the Central Ontario Power Company. It, bears interest at six percent. and has been running nearly ï¬ve years ; hence n. is worth $1950â€" a rather considerable asset of' the town. There are two things that Mr. Mc- Laughlin has helped to do for the town that ought to be mentioned. , He was the solicitor among the men who took it. on themselves 'to investigate the Fenelon Falls power, with a. view, presumably, of having the town buy it. [they got the ex- pert . were sidetracked before their faces, and then stuck \the town for the $400 expenses. That claim of his backers that Mr. McLaughlin ought to be supported because he has done things for this tqwn. deserves to be examined.
