The need for teaching ï¬fth classes in the common school was reâ€"aflirmed, and council followed up its memorial to the Minister of Education in June for their restoration, with a similar one to the legislature. The Roads abd Bridges This committee followed. It con- sidcrcd coun. Bailey’s report of the work done by him on the certain bridges in the north. The outlay was over $1000 and council begged “to express approval of the manner: in which Mr. Bailey had discharged the duties entrusted to him.†In speaking of his work on one bridge Mr. Bailey said that it was a mistake to put bottoms in abut- mcnts. Usually these were put in to hold the stones to sink the crib. He put pockets in the sides to hold stones enough to sink them. With- out. bottoms they sink into the soil. Whereas with them they sit upon it "ï¬n-1 - and are soon undermined and topple Over. He had got labor for $1.25 per day, mechanics for $1.50 to $1.75 teams for $2.50. A Short Session When council met Friday morning llr. Wood was in his place. The doctor had just returned from the scene of the, Rainy River railway operations and took hold of the county business with vigor. A letter from Dr. Herriman secreâ€" tary of the Children's Aid Society said there were a. Protestant. girl and boy and a Catholic girl in charge of the society waiting for homes. They are from 31,52 to ten years old. Some reports were read and council adâ€" journed. The Need for a Refuge.
