However. through traï¬lc was not. delayed as the break occurred directly opposite the switch which in the meantime was he- nna occupied as main line. The switch. therelore, was open at each and for the accommodation of all ap- .\s the 11.15 a..m. express .was near- ‘ in; the western switch. at somewhat met-eased speed owing'to its being a 3,“. minutes late, 'the engineer, Peter McCluskey, of Toronto, failed to ob- arrve in time, that his train was to â€Â£11m the switch. The ï¬reman, Albert Bishop. also of Toronto, busy with some nmessary task at the time, did cm. detect the danger soon enough, and although the brakes were applied as soon ~as possible, the train made the sudden transfer at ‘t00 high a. speed to keep the rails and in a mo- ment not a. single section of the tram remained in place. The engine. the best in the service on this d,vilion. remained on the roa-dbed for possibly twice its length, 'and then turned down a steep bank to the left, tearing on‘ its Sore trucks as it buried its front in the frozen earth below. The tender. being freed from the engine ahead. continued F with the rails, passed the engine. and lay broadside o! the switch a few 'yards beyond. The mail and baggage car also passed the engine to . come toa sudden- standstill, derailed, con- siderably damaged with the trucks :disarranged. The middle coach, turn- |ing more to the left, collided with the rear of the engine proper, stood mo- tionless On the edge of the embank- ment‘with its front trucks lying in the ditch below.
