A WOLF Panamaâ€"In the Gazette of lNovember ï¬sh was a paragraph stating that Mr. J. J. Wilson had seenalarge wolf come from Mr. J. D. Naylcr‘s farm, cross the road and disappear in Smith's woods. A great many of our readers scouted the idea ofa wolf being so near the village, and declared the animal must have been a dog or an overgrown fox; but there is no doubt that Mr. Wilson’s state ment was correct, for a she wolf that weighed 52 pounds and measured three feet exclusive of head and tail was poison- ed last Friday on Mr. Robert Walsh’s Walsh’s farm, about smile from here. Mr. eldest son, Willie. about 13 years old, had laid poisoned meat for two foxes that he had seen in a swamp on the farm; and he says that about a fortnight ago, while in the swamp with his dog. he saw what he thought was a tremendously large fox, but which no doubt was the wolf, and it stood snarling and bristling up its hair for some considerable time before it ran away. On Saturday he went to see whether any- thing had been at the poisone meat, an I found that it was gone. Following some tracks in the snow, he came to two places where some animal had evidently been kicking and struggling. and not far from the second the wolf was lying dead against the fence. The boy managed to carry or drag the carcass home with him, though it was all he could do. and on Monday Mr. Walsh brought the skin to the Falls. and Mr. James Dickson, J. P.. gave him a cer- tlflcate that will entitle him to a bounty of 86 out of the county treasury, and then clipped off the wolf’s ears as required by law. The skin, which was a very ï¬ne one, as the animal was young and in prime condition, was sold for $2.25 to Mr. J. H. Brandon, who has a happy knack of turn- ing up when a bargain is to be had. Evidently the wolf has been in this vicinity for u wards of three months, and probably kill some of the sheep that were believed to have been destroyed by dogs. It is very unusual for a wolf to be found in so thickly-settled a locality as this; and, as it is not likely that it came here alone, farm- ers and residents of the outskirts of the ‘â€"-~4eorrgg‘ """“vâ€"uâ€"- ' 'D‘H roe-run lei}: .nd ridden. a vlllme should keep Ito munâ€"[G zona- nmmnmonn.
