He did not hesitate to tell his hearers that it was necessary to have perfect love in the heart in order to be able to pass through the gates of the city; that the breaking of the least of the commandments would debar us from His presence. Be very forcibly presented this thought to the audience in the following illustration : He said the law required that the queen’s body guard must be composed of men who are fully six feet in height. Sev- eral men presented themselves for accept- ance, but on being measured one was found to be one-quarter of an inch too short and was rejected ; another was found to be one- sighth of an inch below the standard and must be rejected, and likewise, we when presented before the ï¬nal Great Judge, must measure up to the standard if we expect to sin admission to our eternal home. . . .In the Sunday evening service there was such a jam that standing room was at a premium. Several had to go away ...... Monday the weather was unfavorable. but despite the inclemency a goodly number of people assembled themselves to do justice to the abundance of good things the ladies had provided for the body. Shortly after 8 o’clock the chair was taken by the pastor of the church, and after a short opening ad- dress the program was proceeded with. We would maze mention of several of the fea- tures of the evening: Firstly, the Ministerial quartette, composed of Revs. Messrs. Val- lentyne, Yerex, beitch and'Stewart, gave received. The piano duett by Mrs. Bean and Miss L. A. Brethour deserves s ‘ mention. They so delighted the au ienee as to receive loud applause, and had to respond with an encore. The soloby Mrs. ‘ Beall also received continued applause ï¬nd i was well rendered. A patriotic song was ‘ rendered by H. N. W. Stewart, who acted as spokesman for the sustaining of the by-lsw, was too much for his opponents. He was well equipped with facts and succeeded in completely obliter- ating every argument they advanced. In fact. it would have been better for them to have kept silent, and Mr. Stewart's argu- ment was strengthened by_everything they AL _ _L_1- mvuv "us-a thvâ€"D-â€"__V , said. They said they did not wish to be dictated to as to what they would do. They fear- lessly said they were willing to sacriï¬ce their position rather than rescind the motion, as they believed it was in the interest of the municipality at large. We cannot sufï¬- ciently laud their honorable body for the stand they took. We are satisï¬ed they will be praised and exalted by all respect- able citizens. We say the electorate of the township of Brock have great reason to be proud of those whom they placed at the head of our municipal aï¬airs, and this should he an incentive for us in the future to elect such men as will stand by principle, such men as will unite to promote the tem- perance sentiment in our locality, such men as will not beswayed to and fro for the sake of a vote, such men as will put right ahead of party and know no favoritism. mL- -. “gang-an We passed the by law believing it to-be for the welfare of the municipality, And now we are met here because of the urgent re- quest of several of those in favor of a license being granted, to henr both sides or the question discussed and to reconsider the steps we had taken.†The defence then proceeded to make their statements about the respeotshility of the restaurant in the A ___. _--..A_..
