The Democratic Committee on Ways and Mann“ Pall a Bill M: Lumber on the Free List. WASHINGTON, March 1.â€"(Special to the Globe.)-The lumbermen of Canada will be interested in knowing that the Democratic Committee on Ways and Means is deter- mined to pass the bill which will place lumber on the free list. There is, of course, no chance that such a bill will become law, but the movement shows the purpose of the Democratic party. A convention of lumbermen is now here to protest against ‘ the passage of such a bill. but Mr. ryan a Democratic member of the Ways an Means committee, said to-day that the committee did not care to hear any argu- ments on the subject. as they had deter- mined in an event to pass a bill putting lumber on t e free list. The convention includes the leading lumbermen of the United States. The two hills which the convention hopes to defeat are bills intro- duced in the House by Mr. Stone of Kentucky and Mr. Bryan of Nebraska. Mr. Stone's bill provides for the removal of all duty on lumber of every kind and descri tion imported into this country after use 30, 1892. Mr. Bryan's bill does not go so far. merely providing for the removal of all duty on undressed lumber imported into this country after the lat of October next. The passage of either of these bills. the delegates contend, would bethe ruin of the lumber interests of the entire country. and after the convention has decided upon the best manner in which to present theircase before Congress, that course will be vigorously pursued. At present it is believed that the best course would be to present their case before the House Ways and Means com~ mittee. and it the arguments of the dele gates should be disregarded by the committee then organize in the House an opposition sufficiently strong to defeat any such measure. And should the House passeither bill the delegates declare that the light would then be transferred to the Senate. The lumber interests of the United States arevery much excited over these bills. for they fear that by some chance they might pass both Houses. and that the president in that case. in view of the presidential campaign might fear to veto them. ly honored. and the lan- sex found champions to Messrs.
