Chapple lived a month in Lakeilcld on his wits and misrepresentations. He told his new-made friends in the village that he had a team at work in the shanties, and had a wife in Peterboro with money which she would bring up to settle his debts. On the strength of these representations and other premises he received Jas. Dcogan’s watch and chain and left Lskefleld with them and a suit of Doogan’s clothes. Saturday morning the county magistrate found him guilty of stealing the coat and vast. The trousers, the evidence showed, had been borrowed to attend church in, and were never returned. Chapple was sentenced to one year in the Central prison.
